Vanderbilt's Alexander Wiel selected in the 12th round (350) by the Minnesota Twins.

For today I'm not going to do minute by minute updates, have class at 1:15. Will probably just try and update this thread hourly or after every round.
And will only update with current SEC players, won't add recruits.

@VUHawkTalk: Dores recruiting class has 15 of the top 300 players (9 of top 90) in the HS class. Through 450 picks, somehow only 4 have been selected.
VU had 19 committed in this class. I honestly am in shock coming up on 15th rd

Same. This would have to be one of the best recruiting classes ever.

Gonna be Corbin's best on paper, 6 over limit though at the moment.

Do the Vandy players take out student loans?

Dansby Swanson did so I'm going to say many if not all depending on their families financial situation do.

Jeffrey Orvis of U Mississippi taken by the White Sox in the 17th round. Funny, I thought his first name was Sikes, but I guess most people in his profession has stage names anyway.

I swear Vanderbilt has to be doing something to help finance these kids' tuition outside of their 11.7 baseball scholarships. I just don't see any way this many prospects will turn away millions to take a tuition as high as Vanderbilt's. You might get lucky every once in awhile, but they do this with regularity. now, I get the part about Vanderbilt having a great education to sell, but that education isn't free. I just don't see how Vanderbilt is able to do this with regularity.

Can't private schools give arse tons of money for academic scholarships? And LSU shouldn't act all high and mighty. Don't your baseball players basically get free tuition with some in state program?

Yes, if they're from louisiana and qualify for it. Not the same discussion as convincing kids to turn down millions/hundreds of thousand dollars. Not sure how Vandy does it but i wish we could get their secret.

Value of a Vandy degree?
i just don't know if going to college, even vandy, is worth the risk of potentially losing millions of dollars in guaranteed money out of high school.

Its a personal decision. If you really are that good, you goto school, have the time of your life, earn a badass degree, and still get drafted early and get paid. You're much more likely to get to the majors quicker as someone out of a college so its not like your losing time to start the clock for more money.

Yup. Short answer is Vandy education + current Vandy alum in the majors (esp pitchers) + Corbin.

Just showed a stat, 72% of major league starters played college ball..... And that number is going up
College produces more "starters", but if you were to look at performance metrics of all-stars and elite players you'd see that HS has an advantage in that regard.
Its nothing surprising on either end. College guys are more proven and developed, therefore they should have a higher success rate. However, the elite HS kids typically don't make it to college, and those are the guys that traditionally turn into stars.

Most of these guys never graduate from Vandy, they just get drafted again in 3 years and leave.

TOPS is really a unique thing, a lot of states have these kind of scholarships for good grades. I think the point is though here is Vandy is getting kids to turn down hundreds of thousands to millions to come to an expensive school. And it happens often.
