It takes advantage of 3 of the better fanbases in the league - Kentucky of course will fill to the brim anywhere but moreso in Nashville, and Tennessee and Vandy will definitely show in big numbers there too when good. The other two fanbases in terms of overall basketball interest - in my opinion at least - that are up there are Mizzou and Arky. Florida is of course very good in hoops but I think this tourney in Atlanta is a good test - do they travel well enough to show up in large numbers just one state away? I'm not terribly sure that they do. I feel like you pretty much have to have the tourney in Florida to have a truly large Gator showing.

My point of all that being, odd as it sounds to tout St.Louis for anything in the SEC, as far as basketball fanbases it might well be a second best option in terms of accessibility if you look at Kentucky, Arkansas, Mizzou, Tennessee and Vandy having the most basketball-oriented of fanbases, again Florida being the major exception. The problem for UF though still being that if you put the tourney near them, none of the schools closest to them geographically - UGA, SC, Auburn, Bama - are seemingly ever gonna give much of a flip about the tournament or travel to it in big numbers, so it takes away much argument for putting the tounament down in that region.

All that said I and the other Mizzou fans are still just noobs so our opinion as to how to arrange the conference events shouldn't carry much weight. Curious to see if there's any sort of consensus to any of the above from the 12 pre-expansion fanbases.

Woohoo! The Cardinals are only good these days because their stadium is named after a beer. Cheesy gets it. And the Seahawks are good because Microsoft.

I like the venue and staying at that old hotel (converted train station) around the corner is pretty good setup. My question was if the Blues were the primary tenant would they give up the venue on an overlapping sports season? Now that the SEC has added the extra games it pretty much locks up the venue for the week.

They already do for several days during Arch Madness, the tourney for the MVC. I suppose they could put the thing on at the Ed Jones Dome as they have for the NCAAs in the past, but I'd be surprised if enough people would show up to make it interesting.

Mizzou traveled very well to KC when they had the Big 8/12 tourney there and OK when they had it in OKC, but I can't think of anybody in Columbia who is driving/flying 900 miles to Atlanta to watch possibly a single basketball game. I think a reasonable contingent would go to Nashville, especially if Mizzou is halfway decent, but you would have to pay me to go to Atlanta for a bball tourney.
