And nothing beats the burgers and atmosphere at Blueberry Hill in U-City, or the Italian food on the Hill.
Best on the hill is not saying much IMO. I grew up in ATL, and have lived in Louisiana for 5 years @ LSU now. I just find that the Italian food that everyone raves about leaves a lot to be desired in the taste, and spices department. Believe me when I'm telling you that BBhill is wayyyyyyyyy overrated. St. Louis is a very old city, and you can tell by the decor. It's similar to nola, without that Nola sting (if that makes since). Arch is okay, not much to it. Budweiser tour is okay, not much to it. It's a cool place in a part of the country where this type of city is lacking. A lot of affliction wearing dudes, hippies, and yankees in this city...

I'm going Fri-Sun. I'd like to watch a Cards game, but I would rather experience the college town vibe and to to MU's bars than hang out in StLouis. So that kind of eliminates Friday's game (I also don't want to drive the hour and a half to my hotel that late) and I'm sure on Sunday I'm gonna wanna get the hell home. Oh well.

Well, then you might want to start on The Loop in University City. On Delmar Blvd, there's lots of shops, restaurants, etc. No better place to people watch in St. Louis! I love Blueberry Hill, it's got lots of music memorabilia, etc. I think Fitz's Rootbeer is still there too, you can watch it being made. It's a cool, eclectic area.
Then head downtown after lunch, the arch and the brewery aren't far apart, and both pretty much spitting distance from Busch Stadium. There are lots of good places to eat and hang out around there. I'd recommend the Broadway Oyster Bar or the St. Louis Brewhouse. The Tap Room isn't far either, or the Soulard area where there's tons of places.

Agreed. This is how I feel about most aspects of St. Louis. The locals talk it up a lot, but it is mostly unimpressive. Busch Stadium is nice though and the atmosphere around it on game day will be worth seeing.

I'm wanting to make this trip now that the Falcons are playing the Chiefs....

That sounds like a great trip!
For Friday I would sleep in then head down to the Hill for lunch. You can then go up in the Arch just to say you did it, but it's nothing too special. Hit the brewery tour then stop by a local corner bar in Soulard (by the brewery) for a few beers. Then head downtown for more beers and something to eat. Lots of places to choose from on Washington Ave which is a few blocks from the stadium.
I'm not a Chiefs fan but the folks in KC know how to tailgate. It's a great atmosphere.
Have fun!

Agreed, Busch was really the only thing I enjoyed. Went into the dome, and it was hell under a roof...like a said, its a decent city, and it feels pretty cozy, especially in the winter. Locals are passionate.

quote:I see what you mean if the UGA/MU game is a night game. The Falcons/Chiefs game is a noon kickoff and it being the season opener things could be wild and the crowd huge. So the choice is to drive a couple hours (2 and 1/2 I believe)in the night or sleep and have to wake up early to drive a couple hours to KC. Me being a night person I'd drive it at night so I cold sleep a little later in the morning.
I'm just thinking if we end up with an evening kick-off, you won't want to drive to KC after the game
On top of it being the season opener you have Tony Gonzales returning to Arrowhead for the first time since he went to Atlanta I believe. Throw in Sean Witherspoon and Willam Moore two former standout defensive players from Mizzou making their 1st visits to KC as pros if they are still with Atlanta at that time which I've no reason to think they wont be. It's going to be a busy Sunday morning at Arrowhead.

I make the Columbia-KC drive fairly often, it will take absolutely no more than 2 hours if traffic is ok. I'd personally enjoy the night in Columbia then get up early AM and head to KC to catch the tailgate.

You may not have gone to the right places. My favorite restaurants on the Hill are places that aren't as well-known. The ones you hear people talk about aren't nearly the best. My personal favorite is Gian-Tony's, a little family-owned place, they're from Sicily; there are a lot of seafood dishes on their menu, but everything there is fantastic.

Perhaps. I went to two different places nestled is some less than desirable neighborhood. Both were very close to each other and came highly recommended. I thought the food was average at best, and was not reflective of the prices I paid...

Yeah, there are some places that get recommended to visitors, but I don't think they're very good. If a place's menu is heavy on pasta and pizza dishes, that's usually a bad sign.

Thx for all the tips. Probably be 30 days before we finalize all the specifics I'll hit y'all back then. The OP is our ideal weekend if all can get off of work by noonish Thur. & be off til Tues. Only thing that would make it better is if it were the Braves playin' the Cards...

Thanks for update. Won't be going back anytime soon, though...broke up with gf who moved there

Maybe that's why I don't like the place???

Chiefs fans are a lot better than Mizzou fans when it comes to tailgating (and crowd noise). Most Mizzou fans probably don't like hearing that (including myself to a degree), but it's true. GA fans will enjoy it.
Also.... other Mizzou posters feel free to disagree.

Chiefs fans are nuts. KC shuts down when they play. It's the only city I've ever been in that has a game day atmosphere like that for a professional team.

Exactly. There's not a lot of crowds that top the fandom of Chiefs fans, and the ones that do are in the SEC.
