I was in high school when Ellen came out. People predicted it would ruin her career, etc. And for a little while, it did. Now, that kind of controversy seems stupid. I think its a generational thing. It feels like jr. high to me when people are seriously making fun of or hating someone because they are gay.
I think there's a certain age and above that all they know of gays is the really strange, outlandish gays and AIDs. I think for the younger generations, we've been exposed to gays longer and its just not a huge deal. I'm not above making a ghey joke now and then, but I won't ever legitemately hate on someone who is just trying to be themselves. People are either good people, or they aren't. Pay your taxes, do your best, be a decent fricking human being, and whatever else you do is your business.

I think doing it before the draft was smart, much better to get drafted by a team that's aware of it than finding out later and not being cool with it.
Someone else gets it.

If the media knew about this prior to the AP Defensive player of the year award being voted on, I wonder of that played into their selection of him. I only ask that since this article mentioned that 9 of his 11-1/2 sacks came against 3 weak teams.

Just turned on the TV after a nap, saw Michael Sam plastered everywhere, was like wtf? LOL. 9-11 flashback.
Good for him, proud he came out and I'm sure it reflects well on Mizzou to all but the complete dumfuks.

And I don't consider people with religious beliefs to be haters. What really matters is a person's intent. And some people won't ever understand or really even consider some points of view. I take that into consideration.
I have friends who are really good people, but they are hard-headed and fundamentalist about religious things. I have friends who are really good, well meaning people who are so incredibly liberal that it makes my head spin if we discuss certain topics.
The bottom line to me is, even if you think its sin, its none of your damned business. People don't "come out" for your approval or to shove it in your face. They "come out" because they are an extreme minority, and are subject to hatred and violence, and I think its a very brave thing to do.

Because they are not seeking tolerance. Almost every opinion on this board that speaks out against homosexuality is viewed by the "homosexual movement" as being intolerant of Michael Sams. This despite the fact that the movement itself is unquestionably intolerant of other's views. The homosexual movement, pop culture in general and many gay people who speak out publicly aren't trying to get people to stop persecuting or discriminating against gays -- they want everyone to openly acknowledge that there is nothing wrong with homosexuality. Unfortunately, there is. Adultery is a sin too, but if you asked whether sleeping with someone other than your spouse is wrong, everyone would say "yes, it is wrong". But if you say homosexuality is wrong, then you are a bigot. As a Christian, I hope Michael Sams ask for The Lord to forgive him for his sin at some point during his life -- however, one must realize they're sinning before they can seek forgiveness for it. I will not forsake him by telling him what he is doing is not a sin.
With all that being said, I wish him the best in his life and in football.
Well said, which is the point I tried to make 30 pages ago...

Where do you get this stuff? Most everyone on here has just said that they don't understand why he feels the need to tell the whole world what he likes to do in his bedroom.
And Ellen? Seriously, if you think there is any comparison between football players in a locker room in the NFL and the gay-loving Hollywood folks acceptance of Ellen, then you are way off. She stays on the air because she is funny and no one gives two shites about who she sleeps with. An NFL locker room and NFL football players are a whole different world then that which Ellen gets to work in.

That's such a small-minded point of view. I'll tell you why.
Gay people are the only minorities who do not even share their minority status with their own family. Someone like Sam is a tiny minority of our society. One reason to come out is because otherwise he probably won't find a partner, and he probably feels dishonest because you know women probably throw themselves at such a studly football player.
Unless he comes out, nobody ever knows he's gay. And because gays are subject to discrimination and, in many cases, violence, he's taking a stand and letting people know, because as a gay man, he understands that people will inevitably "pick a side", just like they are doing on this board. If you had something about yourself that would cause a large portion of society reject you, fire you, make hateful comments about you, or, in some cases, assault or murder you, you'd understand why its useful for a person to "announce" it. They do it for support and for a "warning" to haters, and just to finally be honest.
What you're expressing is an "icky" factor, as in, "I don't want to think about two dudes doing it...gross" without considering that his announcement isn't about you, or your beliefs, or anything political. Its about a man, carrying a secret, deciding not to carry it any more. I respect that.

I'd say you haven't been around many adult gay men. It's a poorly kept secret for the most part.

Actually I have. I'd say that if you assume that gay men are all "obvious", then maybe you have had limited experience being around adult gay men. I have tailgated with a couple and their friends in Fayetteville. You'd never know. Sure, the people in Sam's immediate circle might know, but nobody on here knew he was. And the larger media and football world would have never known.

Now let's see how he's treated. All that should matter is his ability on the field of play. Admire his courage.

Disagree with someones sexual preference makes you a bigot? Wow...
This shite is beyond stupid. Nobody CARES if Michael Sam is gay!!!
The question is why is it front page news?!?! Your reasons are all crap!! There are dozens of guy guys in the NFL, who cares if they come out or not? Like...seriously.
