It may not be, but we can't fill our already young roster with another 4* at this point. Sucks for the kid, if indeed he really doesn't want to go to MSU ( I still contend that he does)

everybody shits on us constantly, so what else is new?

There are schools that could afford to let this kid out of his NLI, we are not one of them. You don't build a winner by giving scholarships to players at other schools, which is essentially what we would be doing.

ETA: Especially if the school he ends up at is in your conference, which it more than likely would be.

I caught that too.

Why does he deserve better than a free education, room & board, and an opportunity to play ball under his own father?

Exactly. I'd like to know what other options are on the table for Garrison. What other program is willing to give him a full scholly to play ball immediately?

So, I just watched his signing day program. The video and article made it pretty clear that MSU was his school of choice.

Oh yeah, his mom didn't make it to Signing Day.

Garrison's comments on his signing day...
Brooks announced his decision to attend and play for Mississippi State on Wednesday morning — the first day of college basketball’s early signing period — in front of a packed crowd at Auburn High’s New Gym. The four-star prospect then made it official by signing his National Letter of Intent.

"I knew for a couple of weeks," Brooks said about his decision, "but I took a couple of days just to make sure this is where I think is best for me. And this is where I think is best for me.

"It’s a monkey off my back, really."

Brooks’ father, George Brooks, is an assistant on the Mississippi State staff.

"[That] does mean a lot to me," Brooks said. "I never got a chance to play for my dad and all my friends play for their dad, so it means something.

"It meant a lot but it wasn’t the only thing that factored in. It was one of the main factors but the other stuff factored in with it."

For Brooks, a strong relationship with the entire Mississippi State coaching staff was among the most significant factors. Shortly after Ben Howland was hired as the team's head basketball coach on March 23, 2015, Brooks said he began communicating with him.

"They developed a relationship with me from day one," Brooks said. "When coach Howland got the job, the week after, I started talking to him like immediately."

Eventually, on April 8, Brooks had an in-home visit from Howland.

"How much they have invested in me in the past two years made me feel really good about the situation," Brooks said.

Playing time and the chance to have an immediate impact were other big draws in Brooks' mind. He estimated that he will be playing around 30 minutes for Auburn High this season, and in college, "I don’t want a huge decrease, like to go down to 10 minutes," he said. "I don’t want to do that. I want to go somewhere where I get a chance to compete and start and play a whole lot."

Brooks will have that at Mississippi State.

"I saw what the four-man did in the system for coach Howland last year," Brooks said, "but I think I’ll have a bigger impact than he had."

There's another article on AL.com which quotes Brooks as saying that he can't wait to get to State and play with Nick (they've been friends for a while , apparently)
The whole deal sucks for the kid, but it's the mom who is driving this. It's not worth it to Garrison to piss his mom off even more right now, so he's laying low. I don't blame him one bit

So, he signs at Auburn High School, in Auburn where he lives with his mother. His family is all around him yet Mom doesn't show up for the biggest day of the kids life so far........ And now Mom says she's never even seen the NLI and since Garrison is not a resident of MS and has never lived in MS, he was railroaded into signing with MSU in order to protect his dad's job?

Something smells fishy here.

Here's our options as it's been laid out previously in the thread:
Release him now: he can go to any school including teams that play State next year. For all we know he was sent a playbook or whatever so that option is out. Not to mention he cost another kid that wanted a scholarship a chance to be here.
Deny him now: he can tell his mom to frick off and stay if he wants to be here and can go to prep school if not. We can also release him to certain schools after he enrolles and he can transfer like any other player in the country.

It's a sticky situation all around really.

Ya I don't know why people think his dad would be fired or that Garrison is "protecting" his job by signing with state. George has worked for State for 6 years. Before Garrison was even a legitimate prospect. Hell he was 12 when we hired George. It's not like we hired him to get Garrison and are going to fire him if we don't. That was a total bs excuse for the media and should show you that the mom will say anything to make George and Msu look bad.

ETA: and to put into perspective how crazy his mom is, Paul Jones, an Msu recruiting journalist caught Garrisons Mom tweeting him and texting him pretending to be Garrison. Paul confronted her about it and she admitted it was actually her and not Garrison. Garrison even talked to him and apologized. The woman is BAT shite CRAZY.

The kid needs to take the path of least resistance at this point, he's got a good thing at MSU if he'll open his eyes.

He had a relationship with Howland and the MSU coaches for over 2 yrs. He acknowledged the time and investment MSU had in him for over 2 yrs and he appreciated it so he signed the NLI after taking time to consider his options and choices. He felt like MSU was where he wanted to be, was excited to play for his dad and was eager to play with a friend on the team.

Now here we are a few weeks prior to graduation at Auburn HS, and Momma suddenly has a problem, wants to hold a gun to MSU's in an attempt to force a release from the NLI. She decides to "lawyer up" if needed, and chooses to go public that the kid was railroaded into signing with MSU to protect Dad's job.

The problem is that Msu is now catching a lot of bad publicity from people that don't know the situation and don't know the mom is crazy. Mostly because that stuff isn't being reported as it really shouldn't be. But at this point, I think we did the right thing in buying more time and letting the situation play out.

We'd definitely take him, but we already have 5 guys who play his position and have multiple years of eligibility left

We don't need him and even during recruitment he wasn't at the top of our board. We assumed North Carolina was getting him anyways

Auburn would be the obvious suspect in a tampering case, but they've had years to reach this kid. Why would they press now? Looking at Brooks timeline and looking back at his recruitment, UNC fans have been and seem to still be the most butthurt about this situation. The only thing I am certain of : somebody is paying momma to raise hell

We definitely haven't been tampering with this one. At least not trying to orchestrate this whole thing

There is a spot for Brooks at AU, but we already have multiple people at his position. Tampering/being sketch makes zero sense
