There are a few studs in the juco system. A few.

I read in this thread that MANY JuCo student athletes are SEC-level, which I guess will be true as long as State is in the conference.

Saban would regularly get one or two Juco players a year. But, it was about evaluation. They had to be ready to contribute to an area of need.
There is obviously better development of players in a P5 program. But, the focus is on the FBS portal for most programs now. We might be seeing a broader pool of JUCO talent ready to play going untapped by bigger schools with deeper pockets for the FBS portal market.
And, yes, the old JUCO model led to a boom and bust cycle. But, that is not wholly different than the portal market. Going too heavy in the FBS portal has the same effect as it affects cohesion, see FSU.
I think there is still a delicate balance of finding value in JUCO, selectively filling needs in the NIL portal, and HS recruiting. For teams with fewer $$ to bring in blue chip recruits at a high clip or compete for elite FBS portal prospects, there remains a viable market in JUCO and FCS

You undervalue the commitment of some of the big donors associated with the UoM to rebuilding a competitive football program.

Maybe they're planning to do both?

Miss State is struggling hence the Juco prevalence. Miss State has always been dependent on juco amidst their frequent bad years although this time, they really do not have to depend on juco, they can also depend on the transfer portal. The transfer portal was a big blow to juco. The Cam Newtons dont have to go juco anymore. They can just transfer to a different school. I would be very sad if I was Miss State right now. The pinnacle of Harsin's 18th ranked recruiting class was two top ranked jucos and they were both busts.
It isnt fun to pick on Miss State anymore because their situation is that bad. Just collect your wins and shut up.

Right. It has happened to each team over the years. Probably will again.

JUCOs are hands down the cheapest players to sign right now. The overall quality of JUCO teams is way down but there are a couple of good players at that level still.

All of this is correct. Grades are the only reason outside of talent to go juco now. So you’re taking a huge grade risk there.
You’re far better off going to a P5 or an upper tier FCS school for a year or two and then transferring up.

Yeah grades is usually the main reason these days. But somehow teams like Louisville can smooth that stuff over as well. If a player can make a 14 on the ACT they are probably okay.

Again, I think they will do both. I bet they have a huge roster turnover this year. Like 30 out and 30 in or something. Think Colorado when Deion showed up.
I don't think picking up 8 JUCOs is the end of the world, as long as they are replacing 2 and 3 star HS kids instead of 3 and 4 star portal pick-ups.
If they add 20 to 30 portal kids, and 2 JUCOs pan out and 6 bust...how is that different than signing 8 HS kids and having 6 of them bust?
It's just not the same as picking up 8 JUCOs in the 90s or 00s. Back then, that was 1/3 of your class. They had to pan out. Now, if you sign 20 kids and transfer in 25 guys...Suddenly your class size is 45 and 8 of them is less than 18%. Sure, you don't want to do that every year, but it may not be a horrible strategy once every few years. I mean it's 8 guys. So what? If 4 or 6 of them pan out, they'll look like geniuses. If 1 or 2 pan out, I doubt anyone will ever know the difference.
I think the biggest risk is that now they have to have a slightly higher hit rate on transfers for this to pan out. I guess we'll see. In my mind, they suck again next year no matter what. We'll see if this panned out in 2026 and beyond.

True but I highly doubt their team talent levels really jumps from where they are at. Teams like Missourri and Vandy jumped year over year from the previous year and that made a difference. State still finished poorly despite having a floor rating where bigger jumps are easier if that make sense.
More than likely that talent doesnt jump at all again.

What's wrong with juco players? They develop the same as the rest
Posted on 12/5/24 at 1:17 pm to kywildcatfanone
If they did they would not be at juco.

First off, I think the OP is more than likely a troll.
No I’m genuinely shocked an SEC school signed 8 JUCO’s in 2024.
Just go get solid G5 players.
Can’t think of the last JUCO player who did anything in the SEC since NIL and the portal became a thing.

If I was State, I'd take advantage of the excellent MS JUCO system. I knew for a time that Bobby Bowden had a specific JUCO in MS he'd send his recruits to that couldn't make grades (can't remember which one, but they won a JUCO national championship at one point in the 90s).
Yes, there is a risk that these kids won't be able to transition academically from a JUCO to a D1 school, but academics are becoming even more of a charade for "student-athletes" now more than ever.
My only concern about JUCO as opposed to a FCS or G5 school would be the strength and conditioning and dietary/nutrition stuff, but only because have no idea how a JUCO does that compared to even a school like NMSU or MTSU.

It’s our in state rival. It will never not be hilarious being petty and dunking on them.

They have lost like 50% of their 4 star recruits over the last 4 classes or something absurd. They legit may have single digit 4 star recruits on their entire roster.

Not sure what the angle is in bringing this up?
Juco, Transfers, High School commits.
The Juco and Transfers have a more proven track record and a coach has a better understanding of what they are getting. The incoming crop of signees have so many unknowns.
It's a new world.
