I see it both ways. Yes it is selfish to leave your team and teammates like that.
But these guys are 1 play away from their careers being over. Or if not over, 1 play away from dropping down or out of the draft and losing millions. So o get why they want to opt out of the bowl game.
The NCAA did this to themselves though. With the playoffs, these other bowl games are little more than glorified scrimmage games, so it’s hard to argue that a sure first or second round pick should risk his career in a meaningless game.
You don’t see guys opting out of playoff games.

I wonder what the relationship between bowl prowess and opting out is? How many players will opt out of a NY6 Or even NY day bowl? I can see being pissed about a player opting out of the cotton, peach, or rose. But to be pissed about a player opting out of the meineke car care golden muffler bowl? C'mon.

Tell that to the kids that lost millions and millions of dollars from major injuries.
Who?
There's been a few, but career ending injuries are almost non-existent.

Doesn’t have to be career ending to cost you millions. Especially if it causes you to drop in the draft or leads to issues that shorten your career.
And just because it doesn’t happen often doesn’t mean these kids in meaningless bowl games should risk it.
Is it selfish, sure. But I get it and don’t blame some of these kids for doing it.
Now, playoff games are different. Playing for a championship is a lot different than playing in the Birmingham Bowl.

I also don’t understand why coaches even care (outside of their own bonus). If anything, it allows them to let a younger player, who likely is on the starting depth chart for the next season, get a few weeks of practice as a one and reps in an actual game.
Realistically, whether you win the Outback Bowl or not has no impact on the future health of the program.

So I guess The Pirate isn’t being the least bit selfish wanting his first round draft pick tackle and a cornerback to play in a meaningless shitty bowl game?
Of course he is and that’s fine. But I have zero issue with players sitting out a completely meaningless shitty bowl game, and not risking injury.

Then why didn't they sit out for these bowls in the past?

How are the playoffs any different from these meaningless bowls? Those are extra games a player can get hurt and lose out on a lot of money.

So are players in recruiting.

So glad these coaches are leading by example like Bryan Kelly by not opting out of his bowl game.with Notre Dame
How do you know Leach doesn't think this is also selfish?
And I agree with the players who sit out meaningless bowl games in most cases. I think the vast majority of them would play if they were in the playoffs. This is why we have to expand the playoffs. It is the dumbest thing ever. The NCAA basketball tourney used to be 4 teams. I can't imagine NCAA hoops without March madness.
And for those who say it hurts the regular season, I would point to the Houston vs Bama basketball game last night as proof that is not true.

If you can’t tell the difference between playing for a championship and playing in a glorified scrimmage, that’s on you.

That happens in all sports even high school because it is a job.

They are just extra games that provide no financial benefit to the player. Trophies are meaningless compared to money.

Mike calls it like it is!

How is expanding the playoffs going to make these game more meaningful? The more games, the higher possibilty of getting hurt. If anything it just encourages them to declare for the draft earlier.

I wouldn't care because I could turn on and watch a boring NFL game aka the no fun league.

Well give me a list of every football player who has opted out of an NCAA playoff game then. I can't remember one.

It could happen and if does then the same people who said it was ok to skip bowls, will bitch they skipped out on the playoffs and call them selfish and quit on the team.
If I'm a first rounder and had a chance to be the number one pick then I wouldn't give a damn a bout bowls or the playoffs because they would have no financial benefit to me.
