It's not illegal for a coaching staff to do it either, but it is against the rules and they all know it. I know the SoEveryoneCheats league is pretty flippant about rules, but most staffs try to operate within the rules and operate with some level integrity.
100 percent against ncaa rules for any coach or staff member to use electronic equipment in advance or during games for the purpose of sign stealing ….
Illegal or against the rules are 2 different things but if a coach gets caught he’s going to wish it was illegal so he would have never tried it .

Let cheaters cheat and let players play. If Michigan is good enough to beat everyone so be it.
Don't let Michigan dodge a butt whipping from an SEC team through playoff exclusion. We would never hear the end of the whining if that happened.

one year, my son was coaching a bowl game at his school. 2 nights before the game, a fire alarm was pulled and hotel cleared out in the team part. only thing missing was a GA's laptop and a team offense practice play sheet. good times!

They have all the opponent film cut up and organized already. Now they just add in various signals to tag to those formations and you've got a pretty good library of usable information.
Exactly. This is a big deal

In regard to the rule yes, I understand it violated a rule but for those that do not know the rule was created because smaller schools complained they did not have the resources (money) to scout like the big schools. It was not a rule created based on ethical concerns or cheating. It was a rule because only the big schools that could afford to do it were.
My question though is you steal the signs for all their plays. From what I have seen there are dozens of different being called with a multitude of sign combination. How quick can someone identify the play during a game and relay it quick enough for the O or D to successfully counter it? What happens it the wrong personal is on the field, or the offense is in a hurry up? Can you identify what they are calling quick enough to make it useful in real time?

First of all if the cheating aspect of this entire ordeal is valid, it is indeed a big deal. If Michigan cheated, they should be punished. That is not in question.
However, this is not a big deal as it applies to gaining an advantage. The signs are given in front of tens of thousands of people each week. Do you realize how easy it would be to record the signs of your opponent each and every week? An Alabama alum living in Atlanta could attend a game in Athens, record every signal with a cell phone and it would take a minor miracle for him to be caught. And even if he were, there is no penalty in that unless you can prove he is going to give it someone at Bama. I'm willing to bet head coaches who have an $8-10M annual salary on the line have thought of this as well.
Knowing this, and knowing these signs are so vitally important, don't you think teams are doing things to make them less decipherable? Do you think the wristbands that players wear are the same week to week? That the signs do not change? That the multiple coaches/players on team sidelines giving multiple signals are doing that to mislead the opponent?
The entire sign stealing saga in any sport is complete bullshite. You don't want something of value to be stolen, you either make it hard to steal or don't put something of value out there to be stolen (i.e. disguise its value, give misleading signs).
