Sports Illustrated has him listed as the top contender. Tebow and McCoy have fallen.

What were those rush defenses ranked before they played Bama?

I think he is a great running back but I know that the yankee's will not award him the heismen because he is from BAMA.

When he runs all over UF in the SECCG, and eye gouges Spikes for the hell of it, he will be graciously given the Heisman.

It would make more sense to have the updated rankings at the end of the season, no? Want to see the whole picture, not the snapshot

..and furthermore, how do they stack up to the defenses McCoy has put his numbers up against? Not like he's been going up against abunch of Steel Curtains in the Big 12.

SI says that the reason he is the top contender....

"So what makes him the Heisman leader? In four games against ranked opponents, he has averaged 178 rushing yards."

1. Mark Ingram, Alabama, RB, Soph.
Last week: 22 rushes, 144 yards; 5 receptions, 30 yards in a 24-15 victory against No. 9 LSU
Season: 175 rushes, 1,148 yards, 8 TDs; 24 receptions, 216 yards, 3 TDs
Heisman-o-meter: After Ingram had just six carries for 38 yards in an offensively inept first 30 minutes, the Tide fed Ingram early and often in the second half and he shouldered much of the load on the team's first two scoring drives in the half. He was his vintage self, darting through holes and hop-cutting by defenders and finished with 106 yards after halftime. His most important carry may have been the least exciting: a two-yard dive on fourth-and-inches in the fourth quarter to seal the win. So what makes him the Heisman leader? In four games against ranked opponents, he has averaged 178 rushing yards.

What everyone in here hasn't mentioned yet is Ingram has 29 receptions and 3 TD's recieving. The guy is averaging 6'6 YPC, that's just crazy. He has played his best games against the best competition.

VT- 150 yards
UK- 140 yards
OM- 172 yards
SC- 246 yards
LSU- 144 yards

And that's not counting his recieving yards in those games.

McCoy, if Ingram is back next year he should be better and stronger. I think that is the way voters tend to look at it. McCoy's to lose unless Ingram puts up some insane numbers to close out the season.

Yeah, McCoy is probably going to win it but Ingram has still impressed the hell out of me. He has all the tools. That step back move is just nasty.

According to ESPN's rankings Ingram is the frontrunner with Tebow behind.

CJ Spiller is building a lot of steam right now too.

Ingram's stats are heisman worthy at least IMO.

175 Carries
1,148 Yards
6.6 YPC
8 TD's

24 Receptions
216 Yards
9.0 YPR
3 TD's

Ingram's not best player, and cetainly not the most valuable, on his own team... That goes to McClain. He's good, no doubt about it, but Heisman worth?... I don't think so.

It's really crazy to think what this award has become... the best offensive player on the best team.

CJ Spiller is the best college football player in america, IMO.

Without Ingram, Bama loses at least one. To say he's not the MVP is silly. He wears down D's. Wait till the SECCG when he runs all over UF. He'll get the SECCG MVP, and get the nod for the Heisman.

I am not a previous Heisman winner or a write with a vote, but if I was either, he would have my vote.
