It is quite understandable. Multiple teams claim titles from the same years across the history of college football.
Meanwhile, the NCAA awards the national championship in all other sports. Example: Arkansas claims 1964 football, as does Alabama and Notre Dame. While the NCAA recognizes all 3 as title winners, they do not recognize them as NCAA championship teams. Same with LSU claiming 1908 as does Pennsylvania and LSU claiming 1958 as does Iowa.

It is the NCAA and they punished Arkansas for something a coach did while not at Arkansas. It involved Tyson Gay and the UofA attempted to simply subtract Gay's points from those two national meets(Arkansas won by such a margin that they still would have won both titles without Gay's points) but the NCAA being the NCAA, declined that offer.
It involved assistant coach Lance Brauman and something he was involved in at Barton Community College prior to taking a position with Arkansas, which makes it even more of a farce.

I think the NCAA recognizes LSU football in 1908. LSU does not for some reason. The school will not claim it

It’s true bro. It’s probably me more than the others puffing up.
We try to be somewhat humble. Seeing how it’s a well known fact that the academics and athletic department are top tier.

I back tracked and gave LSU the well deserved acknowledgment. I consider both individual and team championships the same personally.

I understand that with the early years of college football, but the AP and Coaches Polls have been established as the main polls for decades now. They are the only two polls we see in the media each week of the season on TV, etc.
LSU doesn't even officially claim the 1908 title. As for 58, Iowa lost a game by double digits and had a tie while LSU was undefeated and was named the champion by the AP and Coaches Poll along with every other publication (so Iowa claiming that is a little silly too, but I get it). And now that there is a game entitled the "national championship" game (although not affiliated with the NCAA), it seems a little ridiculous at this point not to have something in place to recognize them as NCAA championship teams (odd to be involved the whole time during the season except when it matters the most at the end).
