Year 3 coming (as head coach) and I'm still honestly not sure. I think the floor of the program is 8 or 9 wins, because he's such a good recruiter and motivator. However, when I see him losing his mind on the sidelines like he did in the UCF game, the word championship doesn't leap to mind.
Also haven't been overly impressed with end of half, end of game coaching. But then no one could be worse at that than Les and he got a Natty, so . . .

I think he's the guy, and I don't see any other big splash signings out there.

You ever seen Nick Saban on the sidelines? I also don't recall anything especially noticeable during the UCF game. Only time I recall him getting pissed off was when Burrow was killed on the pick 6. Nothing else was out of the ordinary for a football coach.

That just tells you that he actually gives a crap about winning.
If you've ever had one of those coaches with a stone face as his team is playing like shite, you wonder how he could ever motivate a goat to eat, much less motivate a team.
Mike Sherman comes to mind.

Big Ed is doing a really good job. Leave him alone. I am hopeful Ed will never sign a great QB. I don't want him beating Bama.

shite, to a lesser extent, Les Miles comes to mind. Very rarely did I ever see him chew someone out on the sidelines. Obviously you don't want your coach acting like a lunatic all the time, but sometimes players/coaches need to be chewed out when they screw up.

You have some ignorant friends....

Wouldn't trade him for any other coach in the SEC, other than Saban.

Do you see him as “the guy” who’s going to beat Bama?

As long as LSU is making big bucks, O is safe. Les Miles was becoming a threat in terms of significant $$$$$. losing to bama was irrelevant. Miles was losing to Arky.
Some of my buds wish he had shat the bed, gotten canned, and made room for a splash hire but others were more in “the future is now” kinda mindset.

Going to need high quality play, not just a gamer, at QB. All skill positions. O has overachieved in a lot of ways. Next year will be make or break in a lot of ways in my mind. I'll give him that much. I think we'll all know by the end of next season which way to go.

If he finishes less than 10-2, doesn’t replace CE with another disappointing offensive year, or fails to start nailing down top DL/OL recruits he needs to hit the road. I’m still not happy with him as HC but he had a better season than most expected.

I am a LSU fan and want team to do well, but I have never liked Ed.
After he gets comfortable with extensions & guarantee$ he will likely end up leaving LSU worse than when he arrived including possible sanctions or NCAA investigations. We have a weak AD who is tied to Orgeron now.
I also think Orgeron is fake and spent most of his career bad mouthing LSU to suddenly it becoming his dream school. Les was not strong enough as a head coach or strong enough in his position with LSU at the time to hire this kind of backstabbing guy to be on his staff, and it came back to bit him. I was ready for Les to leave, but I wasn’t expecting LSU to actually hire Ed.
But LSU rarely hires like they did with Saban or like they tried with Bo Rein ( Arnsparger was probably also against grain).

I was definitely opposed to O getting the job.
The floor at LSU is something like 3-9, just like it is anywhere else. A shitty recruiting job and poor prep, and things can go bad in a hurry. LSU fans USED to know that, we lived through Curley.
Hell, we lived through 1998- where we entered the season in the top 10, and had a great offense that ended up averaging over 30 a game. Started off well, with 3 big wins (2 blowouts and a decisive 31-19 win over Auburn), then lost:
27-28 to UGA, 10-22 to Fla, 36-39 to Ky.
We then blew Miss St out 41-6,
then lost:
31-37 in OT to Ole Miss,
16-22 to Alabama,
36-39 to Notre Dame,
and finally gave up and got drilled by Arkansas 14-41.
That was a good team that could beat anyone, but they couldn't close a game to save their lives.
Long story short, O has been good enough to not have that happen as of yet.

It really helps to read and have the ability to comprehend what is written. I said the floor is 8 or 9 wins because Ed has proven he's a very good recruiter and LSU is the only legit D1 program in a talent rich state. So when you write "if they have shitty recruiting" the floor would be lower, it defeats the whole premise of what I wrote.

I guess the issue remains about disasters, though; again, the '98 team was loaded. Plenty of talent. If I remember rightly, we were still favored late in the season, even against Notre Dame (who was ranked). That was Lou Tepper and the Drop Linebacker, which proved a terrible coaching job can destroy even a loaded team.
I'd say that team was, player for player, superior to 2018 LSU. And they did scare the shite out of every opponent, they just lost every game.
If that happened once, it can happen again.
