I can see why they called it. A late slide straight at the second baseman to the side of the bag.

Gumps in a nutshell

But I can’t see LSU fans complaining about a call or the umpires. They would never do such a thing.

Heres the rule, note the bolded portion:

quote:

On any force play, the runner must slide on the ground before the base and in a direct line between the two bases. It is permissible for the slider’s momentum to carry him through the base in the baseline extended. Exception - A runner need not slide directly into a base as long as the runner slides or runs in a direction away from the fielder to avoid making contact or altering the play of the fielder. Interference shall not be called.

1. “On the ground” means either a head-first slide or a slide with one leg and buttock on the ground before the base.

2. “Directly into a base” means the runner’s entire body (feet, legs, trunk and arms) must stay in a straight line between the bases.

Milazzo was at least 2 feet away from the SS and in no way impacted the play. By the exception in the written rule, it was a bad ruling.

I’m glad the Bama troll posted all those still that show Milazzo sliding several feet away from the SS. Shows how badly the ruling was botched.

The screenshots posted just show it’s a terrible camera angle. Look at the actual video. Milazzo never changes path or direction yet clearly slides on the base. He is well within all legal rules of baseball

The way the ump acted during review & afterwards was the much bigger issue, IMO

Thank you for posting that gif. It is a great look at the play. It is good that at least one person here admits that by the precise wording of the rule, it was the correct call.

You can argue about whether it is a good rule. But you can’t argue the rule exists. Like I said originally, I simply am saying I can see why the umpire, who was perfectly positioned, called it the way he did. Whether he should have called it is a different question than could he have called it. He clearly could.

That gif is great. It clearly shows most of the runner was outside the line between first and second base. Had the baserunner slid a foot to his left it would have been completely legal..

As for the camera angle, the camera angle is pretty much straight down the base path between first and second. The infield grass is a great reference and clearly shows just that. Just another example of sidewalktiger being a dumbass.

By the precise wording of the rule, it was an awful call.

By your post about the rule, looks like it was a solid clean slide. Thanks for the explanation.
