First time I have ever seen that called on a WR. That was a bunch of chicken crap.
HTH can a defensive player be "defenseless"? A better description would be "clueless".
DB just stood there flat footed watching the WR coming to slobber knock him.
BK needs to teach that player the fundamentals of protecting himself before he gets a serious injury.

Honestly, offensive targeting needs to be called more often.

They ruled a defensive player defenseless.

My bad, thought he was 2020. Seems like a long time.

I would have guessed that he had like 27 degrees from lsu already.
I just did this same thing with friends a while back. Lol

Here's the deal. If your thug player hadn't been blatantly head hunting and had just thrown a nice clean shoulder block to the torso there wouldn't have even been a flag and certainly wouldn't have been reviewed for targeting.
OTOH, #5 should have been ejected for the attempted forearm shiver to a a down RB on the next play after being flagged for head butting our QB.

And based on the rule, he was.
Here's the rule for those that are interested.
quote:
Blind-Side Block ARTICLE 7 A blind-side block is an open field block against an opponent that is initiated from outside the opponent’s field of vision, or otherwise in such a manner that the opponent cannot reasonably defend themselves against the block
quote:
Blind-Side Block ARTICLE 18 No player shall deliver a blind-side block by attacking an opponent with forcible contact
(Exceptions: (1) the runner;
(2) a receiver in the act of attempting to make a catch )
(Note: In addition, if this action meets all the elements of targeting, it is a blind-slide block with targeting (Rule 9-1-3 and 9-1-4).
Blind-Side Block—ARTICLE 18 Approved Ruling 9-1-18
B44 intercepts the pass of A12 at the B-20 and turns back up-field on the return
During the return, B21 approaches A88 at midfield from the blind side and blocks A88
(a) with extended hands;
(b) with a screen type block;
(c) by attacking with forcible contact with his shoulder into the chest of A88;
(d) by attacking with forcible contact with the shoulder into the head of A88 B44 returns the pass to the A-20
RULING:
(a) No foul
(b) No foul
(c) Personal Foul, blind-side block, 15-yard penalty from the spot of the foul
(d) Personal Foul, Blind-Side Block with Targeting, 15-yard penalty from the spot of the foul and B21 is disqualified

He was blocking Sage. He’s also a lot taller than Sage. It was a freaking run play and we teach our WRs to block.

Here, have a tampon.

But that hit went beyond blocking into an illegal play.
FWIW, here's the Defenseless player definition. I'll highlight the applicable language for you guys.
quote:
Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14) When in question, a player is defenseless Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to:
• A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass This includes an offensive player in a passing posture with focus downfield
• A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier
• A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return
• A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier
• A player on the ground
• A player obviously out of the play
• A player who receives a blind-side block
• A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped
• A quarterback any time after a change of possession
• A ball carrier who has obviously given themselves up and is sliding feetfirst
Based on the rule, the refs got it right. And even more than that, you scored two plays later. In the end, the call didn't matter (except that your player misses the first half next week

offensive targeting is just more pussification of football.

There’s a lot of terrible targeting calls every year. This was easily the clearest targeting call I’ve seen this season. Exactly what the rule was made for. Just take your win

First off, I'm not a degenerate drinker.
Secondly, if targeting is going to be a rule, it needs to be equally applied to the offensive and defensive players. Just because a player has the ball doesn't give them the ability to use their head as a weapon. There need to be consequences for both sides of the ball for players lowering their heads and initiating contact.

Its not surprising that you don't know anything about Louisiana State's players.

No, they did not. By rule, a blindside block is a block on a player from another player who is outside their field of vision. (It's stated like that in the rulebook).
Go back and watch the clip. The offender WAS IN the field of vision of the defender. Hence, not a blindside block. Hence, not defenseless. Hence, not targeting.

Wrong. There's this little part of the rule that you're conveniently skipping over.
quote:
When in question, a player is defenseless
So in the opinion of the refs (the only opinion that matters), the player was defenseless. Therefore it was targeting.

A blind side block comes from the blind side. They were both squared up looking at each other.
