I wouldn't call Bama a real rivalry at this point of time. It may develop in to one if both schools keep producing national championship caliber consistently and view each other as one of the top obstacles every year. If that goes on for another 10 seasons, or so, then it will develop in to a legitimate rivalry on both sides.
As of now, I believe that a lot of LSU fans see it as a rivalry because Bama has stood in our way, and in many ways owned, for so long. There were the years in the 60's and 70's that Bama over shadowed LSU and often kept them from competing for titles. Hell, this even happened in the 80s as too. Then there were the 30 years that Alabama went
undefeated in Death Valley, which hurts even more since we take a ton of pride in being so tough at home. The icing on the cake is the Nick Saban thing; however, that's not the way Bama fans like to think it is.
It's not jealousy at all- its bitterness. We could respect that after two seasons in the NFL he truly missed college football. He obviously couldn't come back to LSU because Les Miles was doing a great job (and I, unlike many, wouldn't trade Miles for Saban anyway), but he could have gone to a school that wasn't on our schedule every season. He could have went to a school that didn't historically own us in football. He could have chose any school but Bama (Ole Miss would have possibly been worse if circumstances were right), but he didn't and wefeel bitter as a result.
I know it's hard to fathom, but just imagine Bear Bryant leaving for the NFL shortly after he reestablished Bama as a national power only to return to college at Notre Dame, and Notre Dame was in the SEC. As hard as it is to really consider such a scenario since it didn't and couldn't have went that way, nonetheless, the animosity you already feel towards ND would have been magnified, like ours is toward Bama now.
Despite how other LSU fans may feel about Bama right nowI feel it is not a real rivalry at this time. There is a good and healthy dislike between us growing, but it is more from our side than theirs. When the all the breaks except for heart break is on their side, we will never be a true rival of theirs. There's only room for one rivalry in sports where the heart break almost entirely falls on one side, and the Red Sox- Yankees have that market pretty much cornered
tl;dr- like it or not, history is too one sided for it to be a real rivalry. If teams programs sustain current levels for a while and go back and forth, then it may develop in to one.

That's some good shite ^up there. I agree with keeping Miles over Saban but when Saban said he would have stayed at LSU if he had to do it all over again, I felt sympathetic.
Sympathetic because he now has to coach Alabama.

Why do we need a rival? We haven't had one since A&M, and everything seems fine to me.

I've seen several posters, mainly bammers, claim it is not a rivalry. I would like to hear their explanation.
It is a rivalry of sorts, but it's sort of one sided. LSU may hate Bama 365 days a year because Saban is here, but Bama fans only hate LSU during game week.
LSU has the potential to become a true rivalry, if the games continue to have SEC or NC implications on the regular.
With Tennessee, there's history. With Auburn, there's proximity. With LSU, there needs to be something similar that makes the game extra special to the majority of fans on both sides every year.

We've all seen what a joy it has been to coach LSU this year.

I honestly never knew LSU hated Alabama this much until I posted here.

This
However, if this game continues to have implications like it has the past few seasons this will become a rivalry whether either team or it's fans likes it or not.
Also, I give it 3 years before LSU and aTm are rivals again. As long at aTm can recruit well.

So I have read all 17 pages. LSU posters are PO'd b/c Bama fans say LSU is not a top rival.
Sorry to hurt your feelings, but we simply do not consider you one of our main rivals. Doesn't mean we don't respect your current success. Doesn't mean that the LSU game doesn't cause us some worry. We just don't hate on you all the time. In off season your purple and yellow just doesn't bring out the hatred that orange and blue and that god-awful UT orange bring up. Sorry but it just doesn't.
I am a 4th generation Alabama fan and I can tell you that for most long term Alabama fans the hatred goes:
1 or 2 UT or Auburn. Most hate Auburn more but the younger generation has a very strong lean toward hating more UT more
3. Notre Dame. It is what it is.
Sorry LSU but most of us actually kind of like you outside of playing you.

I get the feeling that alot of LSU fans feel that they are missing a piece of the college football puzzle by not having a trualivee rivalry with anyone so they have been reaching on this BAMA/LSU rivalry thing for a while now. BAMA/LSU is a rivalry but not in the sense that BAMA/Auburn is.
Some LSU fans seem to want Bama to claim us as a rival. I consider them a rival but I want nothing to do with the kind of rivalry they have with Auburn. I like our trees just the way they are... alive.

I still like LSU even though there fans showed no humility whatsoever after the fluked up and won on Nov 5th. The shite talking was unbearable. It truly was sweet the way we completley dominated them in the BCS game and make their little honey badger our bitch. Still, I'm a little bitter at the fans because of all the shite talking but I'll get over it and view LSU as a respectable SEC powerhouse.

I think it just depends what generation of LSU fan you speak of. From what I have experienced, this is my rough sketch of who dislikes who:
The older LSU fans strongly dislike Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Tulane, based on the past with them. When I say older I'm thinking people aged ~55+, who also may not like the other teams that we play, but Tulane(strongly based off the past) and Ole Miss are the two teams that they dislike the most. Their hatred for the Aggies has been reduced being as though we rarely played them in recent times.
The middle aged LSU fan, ~35-55 years old, dislikes Auburn and Florida mostly, and somewhat Ole Miss. They don't like Auburn for the whole cigar incident, and just didn't like losing to Florida badly in the 90's. In some cases they hate Saban which directs the hatred to Bama in general, but some respect Saban for what he did while wearing the PnG.
The younger LSU fans, including myself, ~18-35 years old, doesn't like Arkansas and Alabama, and to a lesser degree Auburn & Ole Miss. The younger generation LSU fans dislike Arkansas for the competitive games that we've had with them, usually in a day game, which we hate. We dislike Bama because of Saban, even though Miles has done a damn good job and Saban shouldn't matter anymore. I think Ole Miss gets hate because most of us waste time and money going on a roadtrip to one of the least entertaining places to watch a football game we visit routinely, though I personally have had good experiences with their usually good looking women. Also, in the Baton Rouge private schools, usually there's a kid who goes to Ole Miss, that everyone can hate for a week or two. I don't get the hate for Auburn, I find it to be one of the more enjoyable places to go to a game for, personally.
ETA: I think Arkansas is the closest to a rivalry we have had, along with Bama. However, I think the dislike for the Aggies is about to come on strong. A lot of grandfather age LSU fans, taught kids, as myself growing up, a good bit of Aggie jokes as a kid.
JMO, from my perspective.

I think the hatred with A&M is about to pick up a lot more, now that we are playing them regularly.
