I thought I was old. Damn. You watched the 1971 game live? I was born that year.

I watched it live, indeed. NU scored the winning touchdown in the waning minutes right after OU had scored to take the lead @31-28....game went back & forth, back & forth. One of the best games I've ever watched.

I agree. It is a wasteland. Not much instate talent. They need a coach who can sell it and coach it.

They were already falling off, but (in my opinion) going to the Big 10 just killed them. They got more $$ but lost all traditional rivals and their recruiting line to Texas. They have not been a top 5 team since 2001!!!

No apology necessary. I really like the banter on this SEC board. Can’t wait until my Sooners arrive and develop new rivals!! I will confess that I believe the majority of OU fans are in for a rude awakening if they think OU is going to dominate in SEC like they have the Big 12. Other than possibly Vandy … I just don’t see any easy games over here. It’s going to be fun though!!!

Now, this kind of attitude is one of respect; this is why SEC schools are looking forward to having Oklahoma as a new member. If Texas fans would temper their misplaced pride and arrogance and show some respect, they'd get some of that back in return.

Welcome, OU!

I’ll be at the game tomorrow. I’ll upload some pics when I get the chance. I’m 38 so I never got to appreciate the classics of the seventies and eighties. I went to a few as a youngin in the nineties when NU had their way with OU. I did get to enjoy in person the #3 OU over #1 NU classic in 2000. That officially established the return of what is now going on 21 straight years of consistently good Oklahoma Football.

1971 Nebraska vs. Oklahoma program. My dad was at OU at the time and got to see the game. I’m glad he kept the program!

That 2000 game was one of the best. Old guys like me go on and on about the 70’s and 80’s but that 2000 game was huge. OU had sucked for such a long time and finally returned to prominence. Did you rush the field after the game? Did you get pepper sprayed?

Long-time Husker fan here. All these years later I still miss the electricity you could almost literally feel in the air in the week leading up to the annual OU game. Times change and nothing lasts forever but those were great years and some great games in the old Big 8 days. We’ve been beaten down and wandering the proverbial desert for 20 years now so I’m simply keeping my fingers crossed NU can keep things respectable but I’m almost braced for a thorough woodshed beating.

How did a “Husker” find his way to an LSU board two years ago?

- Before living in Nebraska for years, attending NU and getting swept up in Big Red fever I grew up in TX and my earliest college football memories included my dad always talking about what LSU did on Saturday. He was not an LSU alum but I think in his younger years the Tigers were “his team” because he had a good Navy buddy that had attended there and also my dad loved and often talked about Billy Cannon.

- Living in Omaha for decades I grew to love LSU fans when they would come up to support the Tigers in the College World Series (which was often). Great, warm, fun and friendly people and I think a lot of Omaha folks always kind of do a little fist pump when LSU makes the CWS because their fans always make it fun.

Sorry for the novel. Here’s to a good and everyone staying healthy game tomorrow Sooners. Hopefully we can make you have to work for it.

Go Big Red.

All the excuses as to why Nebraska can't be good are BS considering right next door Iowa has a solid program without having the tradition of Nebraska. If Iowa can be competitive, Nebraska sure should be able to.

Agreed. Nebraska can recover. They need a coach in there that can re-build and staff himself surrounded by recruiters. I'll never believe that it can't be done. If teams like Iowa State, Utah, and Cincy can become good at football, Nebraska can definitely be re-built. They have more history than all of those programs combined.

I was on the second deck on the west side with my dad and grandfather. It was pandemonium! Seeing the “We’re #1” on the video board was awesome.

The whole 1971 season was going to be a Bama national championship until…Johnny Rogers destroyed us. I was so disappointed I didn’t speak to anyone for a couple weeks.

It was a glorious day. I’d experienced the great OU teams of the 70’s and 80’s but then had to suffer through the 90’s. My God the 90’s were just terrible. I was beginning to wonder if we would ever be back. Then …. the 2000 season and beating Nebraska!! Man we owed them that one after some off the arse-whippings they gave us in the 90’s. I think a lot of pent up frustration was released by OU fans that day!!

Fun fact: Bama’s third string quarterback in the Orange Bowl was Butch Hobson.

Nebraska had simply played against wishbone/ option teams all year and Bama had no surprises for them.
