I didn't say alabama is playing great defense this year. What i'm saying is lsu isn't and they're paying a guy 2.5 million dollars a year to put (by SEC standards) an average product on the field.
Alabama on the other hand is paying a guy 1.1 million dollars a year to put an above average product on the field.
Lsu = suckers.
Alabama = nonsuckers.

FWIW - your stats do demonstrate what you are pointing out, so I suppose just looking at stats means the LSU defense is slightly (very slightly) above average.
There are other particulars to consider. Like turnovers forced (those are taught and schemes for as well). How many 2nd or 3rd stringers played. Injuries.
I’m an LSU fan and I agree with you somewhat. I expect a lot from a coordinator making that much money. Having watched the games it appears the majority of the yards given up came later in games (a la late in an NFL game when you’re winning playing prevent like).
I think with the supposed LSU talent and such a top 10 defense shouldn’t be an otherworldly expectation.

LSU Defense since Aranda arrived in 2016
318 yards per game (9th in FBS)
4.88 yards per play (11th in FBS)
17.0 points per game (6th in FBS)
This seems a bit higher than "average" to me...

They gave up 546 yards to WV and 387 to Florida.
They have a better total Defense because they shellacked UTEP.
We’re 4 games in and most people still have 7 conference games to go.
