My 13 yo loves long jumping. He's the only kid out there doubling in the LJ and mile. He will also throw in a 200, 800 or 3200 occasionally too.

I remember this quote from rival track coach back in the day.
"You would find this amazing runner in Kenya, and have him hidden away in some tiny village, and come signing day you'd find that McDonnell had not only found him, but signed him, and had him on the plane to Arkansas."
I do not think there has been a coach that skilled, in any sport, at assembling talent at the college talent. McDonnell recruited the entire world. Not even Oregon, with all that Nike money behind them, has managed to duplicate what he did.

He recruited Europe and Canada pretty heavily too.
One of my friends (and former GA) was a Canandian who ran for him in the late 80s-early-90s.

In track you usually have a head coach or director that oversees the whole program. You've typically got (at least) a distance coach, throws coach, jumps coach (vertical and horizontal), and sprints etc. We have a long and short sprints coach and our distance is split into mid and long too.
What was your thing on the track team???

Story I heard years ago.
He was recruiting somebody and this recruit had in home visits. Coach came in and didnt say much. Just some small talk. As he was about to leave, he pulled out a brown paper sack. He emptied the sack and pulled out a ring one at a time. He said "here at arkansas we win championships"

42 National Championships if you count the 2 taken away from the NCAA over something an assistant coach did.
