The true GOAT. Michael Jordan went to John McDonnell when he needed advice.

What a legend
Little known fact, he was 27 years old when he ran track as a freshman at Southwestern Louisiana (La-Lafayette), coming from Ireland
After that he coached three years in high school before Arkansas grabbed him up as head cross country coach. He added track and field 6 years later.

Damn that sucks. He was a true legend. I was lucky enough to get to compete against him (if you call it that) in his prime.

How does track coaching work? There are so many different disciplines.

How does track coaching work?
In track you usually have a head coach or director that oversees the whole program. You've typically got (at least) a distance coach, throws coach, jumps coach (vertical and horizontal), and sprints etc. We have a long and short sprints coach and our distance is split into mid and long too.

It is with profound sadness that the McDonnell family announces our beloved husband, father, and brother, John McDonnell, transitioned to Heaven with our Lord and Savior at 10:54 pm on Monday, June 7, 2021. He passed away so peacefully, enveloped in the love of his family and friends. He could have settled anywhere in America after emigrating from Ireland, but chose to call Northwest Arkansas home because as he often stated, this was ‘God’s Country’.
“His career speaks for itself, but what truly spoke was his love for God, serving others, and his limitless generosity. We want everyone to know how thankful he was for the support, love, friendship, and depth of opportunities he received throughout the years. While the world has lost an extraordinary man, we not only mourn his loss, but wholeheartedly celebrate that God allowed people around the world to be touched and impacted by his gifts of faith, love, and inspiration. His legacy and spirit will forever live on through his family, friends, colleagues, and athletes.”

you ran at Auburn buddy?
Yep. And fortunately or unfortunately my freshman year was the first year Arkanasas joined the SEC. At least I can say I ran against the best
