They either donated the money outright or were instrumental in its funding through organizing.

So was Malcolm X and countless other black leaders they want to champion instead.

I'd would hate that.
But I'm waiting for someone to bring up Thomas Cooper, Augustus Longstreet, Joseph LeConte, and so on and so on...
John and Edward Rutledge (Rutledge Chapel, the oldest building on campus I believe, 1805(?)) are the big ones. They owned slaves, Edward signed the Declaration of Independence and John was the country's 2nd Chief Justice.
ya'll got a building named after Wade Hampton who used the Red Shirts (basically the KKK people) to intimidate black voters from voting to win the governorship.

The word racism means nothing

People usually are nicer to severely handicapped people. It has nothing to do with your shirt.

Did these people that buildings are named after donate the money for the building?
Strom did donate a portion for the one named after him on our campus.

No they secured money from the federal government for the building. Its why Richard Shelby has a building named after him at virtually every school in Alabama. It was not Strom's money it was tax payer money. The university agreed to name the building after him, like Shelby, if he secured the funding

So he was instrumental in its funding.
Got it.
Got it.

Ooh that's a good one.
-Confederate general
-Controversial, likely rigged, election to governor in 1876 that ended Reconstruction
-Slave owning plantation family dynasty
-Hampton family is still around in Columbia today
-Wade Hampton is buried 5 minutes from campus

So the Jefferson Memorial should be blown up? He had a black daughter and was a slaveholder.
Strom's entire schtick was racism. There's a difference.

people like Strom Thurmond shouldn't be celebrated.
Oh, come on. Sperm Thurmond fathered four children after the age of 66, the last one being when he was 73 years old. That's gotta be worth something.

He stuck around and provided for them all.
What a loser!

I love how people think the cancel culture mob makes a distinction. If I just let go of this one they'll leave me alone. Thomas Jefferson statues will be destroyed by the ISIS-like authoritarians of the social justice movement before the end of the decade.

At that time Malcolm X and others that felt that way were responding to 325 years or so of mistreatment and injustice by the Majority Group in America
The a-hole segregationists and racists that you are trying to defend and trying to keep statues in their honor NEVER experienced similar treatment from any Minority Group in America, the Native Americans never treated whites poorly(relatively speaking), and slaves brought here in chains never mistreated whites (relatively speaking), basically your comparison of the assholes you're defending to Malcolm X and others is laughable
You're entitled to your own opinion, you ARE NOT entitled to your own facts

Not once in your rambling did you refute the facts I posted.
Your revisionist history is bullshite and you should be ashamed.
Native Americans owned slaves, especially in the south, at a similar rate to whites. When are you going to come after them?
Posted on 6/18/20 at 5:18 pm to Tillman
Carolina is Latin for Charles, who represented royal absolutism, economic and political subjugation of the working classes, western imperialism, genocide of Native Americans and the slave trade! How dare the state of South Carolina and its flagship university carry the name of that evil white devil! I demand the name of both be changed immediately!

Why did blacks sell black slaves ? If you want to get to the root of the problem, don't you have to go all the way down ?Don't blame whites for blacks selling black slaves. Are you on a plane to Africa to confront the problem ? Where is BLM trying to get to the root of the problem ?
Oh wait, those blacks sold blacks to make money. Was it BILLIONS ?

No. Strom did donate $10k of his own $ towards the building.

Thurmond gave fund-raising efforts a boost by contributing $10,000. "I'm not a rich man, but I thought it would be a little start for them," he said.

Carolus is Latin for Charles.
Carolina does not exist in Latin.
Were you just roleplaying Ernie, or did you actually believe that dumb shite?
