Last Days In The Big12

There’s not much I’ll miss about that league in its current state. Although I’m sure you boys down south can understand the retrospective admiration of the pre-expansion SEC. If you’re an actual fan of college football, you’d understand the brilliance of what the Big12 was for over a decade.
I don’t think any league took on the identity of its recruiting base like the Big12 did. Texas highschool football is a high stakes pressure cooker that breeds innovation out of necessity. The Big12 really did become this experimental football lab that would influence football at all levels. Even in its demise it was still probably the best conglomerate of coaches in College Football, evidenced by the amount of professional interest the leagues coaches received throughout the years.
I know a fun talking point about A&M was that they were a middling Big12 team prior to the SEC. Thats not necessarily accurate. The Big12 South was the most competitive division in college sports outside of the SEC West. Texas and Oklahoma were legitimate heavy weights with some of the most talented rosters in the history of college football. Oklahoma State had Gundy backed by a lunatic billionaire pumping hundreds of millions into the Pokes athletic department. A&M has always been able to recruit the highly rated small town kids and the Houston suburbs. Texas recruiting wasn’t nearly as competitive in that era so Tech and Baylor were cleaning up with some loaded rosters too. Not to mention they had Leach and Briles as HCs.
That being said I’m excited about this new era of SEC football. I can’t wait to visit all these atmospheres. The stakes are bigger than ever. What a time for College Football.

It's incredible week to week. You guys are in for a treat. I get when we were in the B12 there were a few big conference games. OU, A&M ... and maybe Tech??
Welcome to OU, A&M type atmospheres damn near every single week.
You going to love it.

Should have stayed southwest and big 8 conferences

Is the big 12 going to be considered a power league going forward? I would hope not.

Not to discount what was going on up North. The Big12 North birthed these really interesting tweener defenders to combat all the air raid concepts that had taken over the southern teams. Gary Pinkel was excellent at producing these guys, Sean Weatherspoon types. Excellent pass rushers too. Snyder almost backdoored K State into national titles multiple times.

Obviously Nebraska was always an atmosphere, but WVU and KSU were also pretty fun. Iowa State was also surprisingly raucous for what the school is (Texas Tech can go to hell, those people suck

Not saying those are at all on par with what the SEC has top to bottom, or even what some B1G environments have, but "underrated" is a fair way to categorize them

I have looked forward to playing in the SEC since the announcement came out that we are leaving the Big12. I never did really like the Big12 when the SWC teams came on board, even though I kept up with every school. Heck, I was even highly disappointed when the deal fell through that would have taken us to the PAC. Now, looking back, that would have been a disaster any way you looked at it. Never wanted to go to the BIG. I will still keep up with the Big12 and have decided to pull for the Neers to win it. Look forward to SEC games.

They’ll cannibalize each other like usual. I think Oklahoma St, Kansas, Kansas State, and Tech run away with that league. Dykes at TCU is a pretender. He took Pattersons elite roster to a national title and disappeared. Utah is overrated.

My favorite was when:
The Big12 had 10 teams
The Big10 had 12 teams
Little did we know that was only the beginning or the clown show.

So what 28 years or so in the Big12 and 4 conference championships in football?
Aggie wasn't the only middling Big12 team in Texas it seems.

I wish I felt as favorable as you do but it is what is.

For about a decade Texas would have been the bottom of damn near every P5 league. It was a mess for sure. Bama knows what it’s like to hit rock bottom, they lost to LA Monroe in the modern era. We also did our fair share choking too. We should have played Miami for the ‘01 National Title. The ‘08 team was stacked, we would have killed Tebow. The ‘09 team an okay squad, if not for a dumbass QB draw call, probably wins a national title. Lots of self imposed missteps for sure.

Such a great conference that you're leaving

Yall boys just had to be there. I know it sounds funny. There was nothing cookie cutter about the Big12, it was a circus every weekend. At least in the SEC you know what you’re going to get for the most part. Sarks going to be the “cutting edge” guy in the SEC, but he was just one of many the last few seasons.

Pardon me for grinning a little.

This is going to end up a power 2 situation in football....other sports will continue on as usual, but why would the 2 biggest/best conferences that compete for the championship almost every year share profits with the leftovers? This is why clemmy/fsu are trying to burn that mother to the ground.
