If I'm their AD, and I have Golding and like him as a successor, I would've just made the extension offer and made it clear that we'd match any offer he received.
There was no point in Ole Miss forcing his hand with an ultimatum because LSU or Florida would've did it this weekend anyway.
What did forcing an ultimatum actually do for Ole Miss in the end, besides create some bad blood?

Ole Miss matches every offer
Kiffin was good enough to make them competitive, but they can't win titles there.
LSU is somewhere you can win titles, even without elite coaches. They're in line to win 8 games this year if they win the bowl, and that's after firing the coach in midseason.
