I actually think our beat writers are too professional. Most programs have at least one complete homer. They all seem to want to be Kevin Scarbinsky.

I wouldn't really care either way and don't really get why anyone would want to "spin" this, but either way it is pretty plausible that Thompson was a casualty of "staff shake up", or at least didn't want to become one and took a solid offer somewhere else.

Either way, fine by me.

Lucky saying the same thing re: the mechanics of Thompson leaving. Pretty similar to the Chris Rumph situation last year I'm guessing.

At least most of his recruiting targets are already enrolled.

Saban has hired Thompson three times at Bama capstone.

Yeah because Tennessee under Derrick Dooley and Auburn under Malzahn are exactly the same. You can also just ignore that Travaris Robinson was considered Florida's best recruiter under Muschamp and 6 or 7 members of Auburn's new coaching staff have been named top 25 recruiters at least once. This is easily the best recruiting staff Auburn has ever had on paper
I think you are correct on that count. They are probably better than the Trooper/Luper/Thigpen bunch y'all praised to the high heavens a few years ago. Congrats on some great hires - Gus damn sure ain't willing to sit back and see of things work out for the best, he takes action.

Two times at Bama and one time at LSU I think.

Twice. Once in 2007. He then left after 2008 for Tennesee. He then came back in 2012. However, Thompson worked for him at LSU in 2000. Thompson also had a third stint at Alabama under Mike Dubose from 1997-1999.

He's a very good recruiter. Not so much on the field coach

I am starting to think that about the entire Bama Defensive Coaching Staff.

Remember when Lance left for Knoxville and said he'd build a fence around Memphis and less than 12 hours later we signed the #1 prospect in Tennessee?

Good times.

You're right my bad. He worked under a different coach in his first job with Bama

I apologize.

Me too. We seem to value recruiting way too much for position coaches. There should be a balance. Then theres Bobby Williams, who seems to neither.

Don't think that hasn't crossed my mind the last couple of years. Seriously, I've seen the secondary and LB corps fall off some and it drove me to drink on multiple occassions this season.

but Alabama's linebackers were still pretty good under him.

From his Alabama bio:

"Junior Adrian Hubbard and sophomore Denzel Devall led the Crimson Tide defense in production at outside linebacker in 2013. Both players accounted for three sacks apiece while Hubbard made 33 total tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss and Devall checked in with 30 stops and five TFLs. Junior Xzavier Dickson..."

Hubbard was shite. Devall isn't bad, nor Dickson, but none of these three would have gotten much, if any, playing time on any of the national championship teams. Nor would Depriest.

Alabama's front 7 is always really good

This was Alabama's worst LB corps since the NC run started in 2009.
