He knows that he will need HC experience to get a big job one day. I like him but without HC experience no way he gets a program like Alabama. Especially with Dabo kicking arse at Clrmson.

It sounds like a good fit, but I can't imagine VT passing over Bud Foster.

He isn't a defensive coordinator. Neither is Jimbo Fisher.

Derek Dooley was not a coordinator at all and that didn't stop you from listing his name. Only Muschamp from Saban's defensive tree failed and he caught some bad breaks. He did make the Sugar Bowl and beat Jimbo in that one season. Kirby would do well at South Carolina or Va tech

Bad breaks? You're worse than the LSU sunshine pumpers. He had one good year. After that, he drove the program into the ground. He lost to Georgia Southern. At home.

Everything that is said by all these SEC HC candidates b/w now and December is all just positioning for the job they really want.

Dooley and McEwain were head coaches at G5 schools before taking their current jobs (and it is way too early to call McEwain a success). Jimbo had the unique advantage of being the guy and head coach in waiting under Bowden at FSU. Muschamp went from DC to HC with no head coaching experience and failed miserably. Kirby WILL fail if he becomes a SEC or VaTech head coach without taking a lower level job first.

He probably looks at Jimbo Fisher and sees a better fit to establish a coaching career in ACC as opposed to SEC. VA Tech would be a good fit for him but recruiting outside of VA will be how you succeed in that job. The next coach at Bama might be a contest between Smart and Fisher.

Why? Gary Patterson, Bob Stoops, Chip Kelly, Mark Richt, Les Miles. All of those coaches had zero college HC experience before they got a shot at a good job in a Power 5 conference.

There is a recent trend toward hiring HCs from a lower school to take over at a Big school. Problem with that is, unless they've lived the big school lifestyle then they may be no more ready to handle it than the assistant who gets promoted.

If you're a guy like Kirby, who has been groomed for the right HC opportunity for years, you'll wait for a big 5 option and you'll make sure it is one you can succeed at. He'll get a good HC opportunity and he will succeed.

Only if he can un-learn all the Special Teams prowess and technique Bobby Williams has taught him at Bama.

Maybe CBW and CKS as a package deal :rimshot:

Kirby needs to go to VaTech or some smaller school besides taking on the unforgivable task of heading up a Ga or USCe.
Going through Missouri to Atlanta has proven too arduous a task for more than two coaches in that powerhouse division the past few years.

It's okay, Bama. I hear this guy is available to replace him.
