"The contract that Johnny built" or was that the stadium?
Sumlin simply has amazing timing & he & his agent are capitalization savvy... not to mention the perfect donor.
USC/Lane Kiffin, Johnny hysteria, SEC newlyweds & A&M brass that were guzzling from a virtual fountain of youth.
I like Sumlin, I'd run up a bar tab with him anyday, but I wouldn't want him running my program. All said & done he played his cards right initially & was a few good coordinators away from taking the Ags to the promise land.

the facts are simple. he did not make that in his first year, which coincided with their first year in the SEC. of course they went 10-2 and beat Bama. then the "rumors" began about him entertaining other offers, particularly in the NFL. so the loyal alumni ponied up to keep him.
even tho it sure seems like a huge mistake now, at the time it seemed like the best thing to do. the fact is no one really knows how any employee is gonna turn out. I formed my negative opinion of Sumlin in year two after Kingsburry left and their offense just didn't work well even with a Heisman winner. the man inherited a great OL and two friggin' awesome RB's and never took the pressure off of his QB by using the running game correctly. and really, the 5 million is not that much out of line in today's big boy football.

Why does he make 5 million dollars a year again?
Somebody had to subsidize Johnny's recklessness.

The problem with the $5m per is that the entire contract was guaranteed. Not something you see very often or ever?
Perfect storm that Sumlin capitalized on, but leveraged to the hilt successfully with the 100% guarantee.
Couldn't take place if not for the SEC & JFF, but they benefited as well, so all good.

Fail #1: In 2010, A&M was tied for 1st with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the Big 12 South. BCS rankings were the final tiebreaker. That year, your beloved longhorns were DEAD frickING LAST.
Fail #2: A&M was tied for 2nd in 2012 with LSU.
Cue the downvotes from the sip alters and Bayou Parasites.

Oh, we see it all too often. In fact, the last FOUR A&M head coaches had guaranteed contracts.
-R.C. Slocum was given a 7-year guaranteed contract after the 1998 season. When he was fired in 2002, we owed him the remaining 3 years.
-Dennis Franchione was given a 6-year guaranteed contract after the 2004 season. When he "resigned" in 2007, we owed him a reduced rate of the remaining 3 years because of the newsletter scandal.
-Mike Sherman was given a 5-year guaranteed contract when he signed in 2008 and extended an additional year after the 2010 season. We just finished paying him off 2 years ago.

Because A&M has money to waste
They are now overpaying their hoops coach too, Stansbury was the real coach and he left

You also lost to both of those teams

You finished 3rd. The only time there's a "share" is if it's for a conference or division title.
The spin is out of control..please continue, it'll make for an entertaining collapse

So you're saying OU beat us 19-33 that year? Von Miller didn't stuff Demarco Murray 8 times at the goalline?
Here's a link for the tiger tard: Texas A&M - 33, #8 (BCS) Oklahoma - 19
