nothing the ku star writes should register on the SEC Richter scale. As my brothers (ATL) have clearly stated this rag is a jayhawk front paper and many if not all Mizzou fans have long since abandoned it and couldn't care less. Turrible excuse for a big city paper. I hope it fails soon.

Oh yeah, you guys have no idea the degree of psychosis that programs like yours, UCLA's and North Carolina's inspires into the Kansas fanbase and administration. Ponder this level of insecurity: they actually hang "national championship" banners at Allen Fieldhouse, and claim national championships publicly and in their media guides and so forth...for 1922 and 1923. Now wait a second, you say. There was no NCAA tournament in 1922. There wasn't even an NIT. Heck there were no national postseason or preseason tournaments whatsoever. And the media didn't declare national champs in those years either like they do now for football either.

And you'd be correct. But their insecurity about lagging so far behind programs like yours in title counts is so severe that they actually look to an entity called the Helms Foundation, which was an unofficial, unelected, unrecognized by the NCAA group of random basketball enthusiasts, who went back and retroactively awarded their own "national championships" for early 1910s, 20s and 30s era teams...based on little more than their own subjective takes on which teams and coaches they thought most highly of, and they thought highly of Phog Allen. ku uses those two "national titles" to publicly push its theoretical title count to five, so that it sounds like they are more in the ballpark of a Kentucky or UCLA.

That alone would be laugahble. It becomes utterly hysterical when you learn the true, documented story of what happened in the 1922 season for Kansas. They opened with a non-conference loss to something called the Kansas City Athletic Club (which sounds suspisciously like a local YMCA, but whatever, lets go with it for now). They then went on to finish 16-2 and co-champions of the Missouri Valley Conference (precursor to the Big Eight and Big 12).

Which is fine except for one problem. The other co-champion of the Missouri Valley Conference that year, Mizzou, finished with a better record than them at 16-1. Mizzou and kansas split their two regular season matchups that year, each beating the other by identical 10 point margins. It was such a dead heat that the conference had no official way on the books to determine a tie breaker and declare a conference champion. So, the Mizzou administration challenged KU to a one game play off on a neutral floor in Kansas City so that a true Missouri Valley champion could be determined. Kansas declined, stating that its students "needed to focus on their studies" rather than prolong the basketball season. Then many years later they go on to run around claiming a retroactive, fictional national title for that year.

So basically ku hangs a national title banner not just for a year in which it didn't actually obtain one, but in which it ducked a challenge from its arch rival to go out and settle its conference championship out on the court.

Oh and for the record, another service that studies college hoops history and does comparative strength of schedule analsyis, the Premo Power Poll, actually awarded Mizzou as its unofficial national champion for that year based on what its research showed. But you won't see Mizzou hanging a national championship banner for 1922 at our arena any time soon because unlike kansas we actually live in reality.

LSU officially claims the 1935 championship awarded to them by winning the American Legion Bowl National Championship game against Pittsburgh.
