I try to put this unfortunate event alongside the one where Quinton Dial destroys Aaron Murray in the 2012 SECCG.
Was legal at the time. Murray was going towards the play. What if he had caused the returner to change course, get hit, and fumble the ball?

LSU was completely shut down in the 4th quarter of the PP game. They weren't going anywhere if they gave it to him.

Michael Williams caught the ball
Nope.
But why didnt the refs Bama was paying say he caught it?
This.
And in addition to this one, no one ever recalls the biggest penalty of the night that the zebras called against Alabama. With 9:48 left in the 3rd, Mark Barron intercepted a pass and returned it to the LSU 3 yard line. A block in the back called against Josh Chapman took the ball back to the 35. A 32 fricking yard penalty. If there was some kind of conspiracy to help Bama, that penalty never would have been called, and Bama likely would have scored a TD. Alabama never had the ball inside the 10 yard line all night.

You know it's bad if Gary Danielson said it shouldn't have been called...
bullshite.
In 2009, Danielson said Tennessee should have gotten a re-kick for this...

And so it is. If the refs don't call it, it didn't happen. If the ref doesn't throw the flag, it isn't a penalty.
So when the dust settles the only thing really left are folks who struggle with that simple concept.

I agree with you, but the absurdity of the missed interception call is not okay

bullshite he was out of bounds...

Considering the views of the on-field officials and the state of video review in that era, it's not that crazy.

We're getting closer to game time! The hundreds of ref threads are all starting to become multi-pagers!

I think it maybe should have been an INT. But, it wasn't as bad as people make out. LSU fans seem to think the moment the ball touched PP's hands that he had possession. The left toe (or right toe? whichever one didn't make the "divot") was very close to being out of bounds when PP did have possession.
It's also possible that the Refs decided that Julio, who was out of bounds, touched the ball before PP had possession. Therefore, incomplete.
Bad calls happen. You still would have lost.

This call was so bad it led to Alabama fans literally making up a rule to try and justify it (something about a receiver being out of bounds and touching the football therefore making the pass incomplete...something that I have never seen called in the history of football in the NFL or college)
He got BOTH feet down on the field, but I'm sure it got "reviewed" fairly
We had no shot when Jefferson got speared right in front of the ref and it didn't get called to start the game.

I finally decided to try out the Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich on Monday. When I arrived l, a local intramural league ref was ahead of me in line wearing his zebra suit.
As I was trying the best fastfood cajun cuisine available with it being LSU week, I decided to stay in the spirit of the rivalry.
So, I placed my hand on the gentleman's left shoulder and slowly, and politely began to read him the menu items. He looked a bit confused for just a moment until he realized I was just being helpful and assumed he was blind. He smiled and just went with it.
hoping for a great game and no injuries

This piece explains it. Julio touched the ball while on the chalk before it was possessed, dead ball just like a fumble if touched in a similar fashion before it is possessed.
LINK
ARTICLE 3. a. A loose ball is a live ball not in player possession during:
1. A running play.
2. A scrimmage or free kick before possession is gained or regained or the ball is dead by rule.
3. The interval after a legal forward pass is touched and before it becomes complete, incomplete or intercepted. This interval is during a forward pass play, and any player eligible to touch the ball may bat it in any direction.
So, a forward pass that is not yet completed or intercepted is considered a loose ball. Now, let’s have a look at the definition of a loose ball out of bounds:
Loose Ball Out of Bounds
ARTICLE 3. a. A ball not in player control, other than a kick that scores a field goal, is out of bounds when it touches the ground, a player, a game official or anything else that is out of bounds, or that is on or outside a boundary line
So, if a ball touches a player who is out of bounds before it’s fully possessed, the ball is declared out of bounds.

Payback for the BS INT call that gave LSU the ball back a few years earlier.

The truth is the ref on the field missed it (either intentionally or is just a shitty SEC ref) and the SEC didn't have replay angles that showed it conclusive one way or the other.
Literally inventing a rule to try and act like it was the correct call and not just a "stands" call is retarded. Yet here we are 10 years later and Bama fans continue to make up a rule
