South Alabama ranks 31st in the country rushing the ball while Bama isn't even in the top 50.

I'm not going to argue that we're a great running team, but Bama has faced the following rushing defenses:

Mizzou: #2
Vandy: #16
UGA: #17
Wisconsin: #19
FSU: #38

What are the ranks of the rushing defenses that South Alabama has faced?

Imagine a Nick Saban Bama team being out rushed by another tiny in state directional school and being well out of the top 50 best rushing teams in the nation. It would NEVER happen.

In 2021 Nick Saban's Alabama team ranked #74 (well outside the top 50) in rushing YPA while UAB (tiny in state school) ranked #51. Alabama went 13-2, won the SEC Championship and finished #2 in the country.

In 2023 Nick Saban's Alabama team ranked #68 (outside the top 50) in rushing YPA while the same South Alabama (tiny in state school) ranked #34. Alabama went 12-2, won the SEC Championship and went to the 4-team playoff.

So it did, in fact happen. Twice. In the last 4 years.

I’ve been there. I’ve seen the downtrodden and broke and living in their last dime. It ain’t pretty, but it’s filled with hope. And you are correct. They are usually right. But they don’t care who wins. They just want money coming in from both sides

I'm better than you may think.

Here is a Preseason listing of returning starters from CBS.com. Note that Alabama's offense includes 3 returning OL starters (Center, Left Tackle and Right Guard). So, basing preseason rankings on units, rather than individuals should be more accurate (especially if you have more previous performance data to base it on). For QBs, you have dynamics like OL changes, WR changes, or even RB changes can impact both receivers available and protection.

Note that in this listing, Tennessee has zero returning OL starters. This was not completely accurate, as UT has Lance Heard who did start last year. He was the sole returning starter on UT's OL for this season...so, expectations and performance should be better for Alabama based on experience. Note that Bama also added Kam Dewberry (who had 32 starts at Texas A&M) and has been starting Wilkin Formby, is in his 3rd year at Bama and saw significant playing time in 2024.

Our line was rated pretty high in preseason stuff and since FSU has played pretty well. They are great at picking up blitzes and the interior is very good in all pass pro. The glaring hole has been RT (which is about to be completed handed over to the freshman Carroll, thank goodness) and Proctor occasionally against a speed rush. Probably half of Ty's sacks the last few weeks have been more due to him holding on to the ball to try and wait on a deep guy to come open than just bad protection.

Tennessee always protects well because of the inherent nature of their scheme and their OL coaching is second to none.

Okay so right as his decline was beginning then. When we beat Bama in 2022, I was thrilled.

But I also realized that that particular Bama team was pretty soft physically compared to the prototype Nick Saban Bama teams and was carried by that midget QB Bryce what's his name....an elite college QB but too small for the NFL.

Dental health isn't great in Tennessee...it is only 3 spots ahead of Alabama.

Sorry...if you click on the arrow on the right hand side, it ranks Oral Health...and Tennessee is 8 spots ahead of Alabama.

But now you've proven your original assertion to be incorrect for the reasons I've mentioned, the difference is no where near the original stats.

Yes...The original point was that Tennessee has allowed fewer sacks, and strength of schedule does play into that. Deeper dives into the data shows that those opponents have had more sacks against Alabama then they have other opponents, while Tennessee's opponents have had around the same or fewer than they typically will have.

While Tennessee's overall numbers are impacted by SOS...the trend is for Tennessee's opponents to have the same or fewer sacks than they would normally expect, while Alabama's opponents will get more.

Ok...here is Tennessee for even more context.

Syracuse had zero sacks against UT. They had: 1 against UCONN, 2 against Colgate, 1 against Clemson, 3 against Duke, 1 against SMU. So, Syracuse isn't a great pass-rush team, but UT is the only team they've played so far where they didn't get any sacks.

ETSU - Won't count their numbers because FCS and FBS don't translate well. Don't worry...I wouldn't have counted Bama's numbers against Eastern Illinois if they played them earlier in the season, either.

Georgia had 1 sack against UT. They had: 1 sack against Marshall, 2 sacks against Appy State, 1 sack against Bama, 2 against Kentucky, 1 against Auburn. For more direct comparison...Georgia had 1 sack against UT in 36 pass attempts, and 1 sack against Bama with 39 pass attempts. So...in the common opponent, they were very comparable.

UAB had 1 sack against UT. They had: 2 sacks against Alcorn State, 0 sacks against Navy (note that Navy had 8 pass attempts), 5 sacks against Akron, 1 sack against Army (note that Army had 3 pass attempts), 0 sacks against FAU. *Sidenote...their Sack against UT was on Jake Merklinger in the 3rd quarter when UT was up 56-17.

Mississippi State had 2 sacks against UT. They had: 1 sack against Southern Miss, 2 sacks against Arizona State, 1 sack against Alcorn State, 1 sack against Northern Illinois, 1 sack against Texas A&M. Not a great game...UT did have to stick a Freshman in at OT for his first college action, but that is a depth issue...and just part of the game.

Arkansas had 0 sacks against UT. They had: 2 sacks against Alabama A&M, 4 sacks against Arkansas State, 1 sack against Ole Miss, 3 sacks against Memphis, 1 sack against Notre Dame.

Well, the results are in.

Tennessee recorded 0 sacks in the game. Alabama recorded 3.

So as I said previously:

You are quoting stats without context on the strength of the opponents.

Dude...if you are going to flame me, at least get it right. Alabama had 4 sacks. Pierre had 3 by himself.

Was one of them the safety I included?

I am going off memory and I figured it better to be under than over.

The safety was from an Intentional Grounding call...I don't know how that is recorded in regards to sacks.

I don't know either. I wasn't counting it as a sack, and I can't remember a 4th otherwise.

I'll take 4 though.

ESPN is showing Pierre with 3 and Smith with 1.
