If you lose the respect of your team, can you still lead them? That's the rub. The best course of action is to just keep quiet on political issues and toe the line for the sake of not pissing off your team mates. With the way society is now, it's impossible be unaffected by being open and honest about your beliefs if those beliefs differ from what the media tells you to believe. It's a sad but true reality
I mean, we all have to deal with this on some level, or at least most of us do. I have to be very diplomatic about how and what I say while on the job because it would be bad for business if I were to be completely transparent and publicized what I believe without regard to my audience.

Most polls show that Americans are over 60% in favor of abortions being available. If football players are at the same percentage, that just puts them dead even with the general populace.

Ok. Let me get this straight. You "lost all respect" because he stated he is in favor of it being more difficult for the average civilian American citizen to purchase automatic weapons used on overseas battlefields ??????????
He didn't say "ban" them. He is only in favor of more stringent regulations for anybody on the street to buy weapons like those used in Uvalde and Newtown.
How is this one simple opinion 'ruining his legacy' ?????????????? Jeezum crickets......

He's misinformed on his opinions about guns. More stringent background checks won't do anything to curtail gun homicides when law enforcement doesn't pursue current violations at all, and his targeting of the AR platform is unreasonable when that platform is only responsible for a fraction of a percent of gun deaths.
He's also misinformed on abortion. The SC did not prohibit a single abortion. They just gave that choice back to the States, as it rightly should be.
