I don't have a problem with smaller schools getting in. I have a problem with teams that finished 6th in their conference getting in.

I think it's fine.
The playoff as it is now is a mix of "earning your way in" and "being one of the best".
Taking the top 5 ranked teams that won their conference is the "earn" side. It both gives lower conferences a shot when the more highly regarded conferences have off years and ensures that teams with weak schedules who dominate them get a chance.
Are they going to lose in the first round? Yeah, they will 99% of the time. But unlike the teams who were unable to win more highly regarded conference titles, they haven't had a shot to show their stuff. They're untested... but haven't actually FAILED the test yet.
So after the 5 top conference champs get a spot, we then look at other teams who didn't win their conference but were still extremely good and might have just suffered from an off game or two.
If we wanted to just get the teams most likely to win a playoff, we really wouldn't need a season. Just take the 12 most talented rosters and put them in the playoff.
If we wanted to just get the teams who "deserved" a spot, we'd take the top 6 conference champions alone, with the only way a team without a conference could get in being by going undefeated in the regular season. They're the ones who didn't get eliminated already by losing their conference. This is the "tournament of champions" scenario.
Instead we have a mix of the two. I think it works fine. Yes, we have teams on the bubble arguing about the fairness of it... but the reality is if those teams really DESERVED a spot, they'd have won more games in the regular season. I'm fine with that kind of drama.

I said 5 teams deserve a spot.
Indiana, Ohio State, UGA, Tech, and OM.
If any other teams wins than these 5 id be shocked
I disagree strongly.
When it comes to winning 3-4 straight games against top teams in the playoff, talent becomes a much bigger factor. Last year the final 4 teams were all 11th or better in team talent according to 247.
To me, if you aren't in the top 15 in talent, you aren't going to survive to the end of the playoff. I don't think TT, OM or Indiana have a shot because of this. The teams most likely to win in my mind due to the 3-4 week grind of the playoff are OSU, UGA, Oregon, A&M, OU and whoever makes it from Bama/ND/Miami.
Unless we get a very lopsided bracket with lots of the lower talent teams focused on one side, I think the final 4 teams will be from the above 8.

Should be top 12 teams in regardless of conference champ games.
If were being honest there shouldn't be a 12 team playoff.
We should go back to the a computer formula similar to the BCS model to determine the participants and it should pick the participants.
I would have agreed that 12 teams is too much prior to the portal/NIL but there is more parity than ever before so the list of teams that could win in any year has changed.
Other than OU, JMU, Bama and Tulane I think any other team is capable of winning this years title with a lucky bounce. JMU and Tulane just don't have the horses to win it all. OU can't win on defense alone and their offense is putrid. Bama is not a complete team. They've looked average since the LSU game.

No, and that’s a good thing.
It’s a reward for the 1 seed to play the 16, based on regular season accomplishments.

A lot of people here expressing their frustration with the outcome.
The first thing you have to understand is the make-up of the CFP.
It is a for-profit LLC with a management committee that consists of 11 entities.
The 11 members are presidents / provosts from the G6 conferences, the P4 conferences, and Notre Dame.
The management committee makes the rules.
Right now, the G6 holds the voting majority.
In order to eliminate the G6 auto bid, the CFP would have to disband and be replaced by a new organization.

If you not ranked in the top 15 ,I don't care if you are a conference champion put the best 12 teams in the field ,Tulane and JM don't belong over Vandy ,Texas

@GEORGIA
Vandy
@missouri
Tennessee
@socar
LSU
^^^would make most teams look “average”
Wonder which other teams would go 6-0 against that gauntlet and come out undefeated, with no injuries?

Indiana has 0 losses, just beat the defending champs, but could be eliminated if they play 1 bad game to a 3 loss team.
Think about that.
I did, it’s called the NFL

This is the price of getting everyone to agree on the format. Have to distribute a few DEI slots to get all on board.

I think the only solution is a separate playoff for the group of 5. JMU and Tulane have no business in this tourney.

force ND to join a conference
ND is in a conference in every sport but football, if I'm right. If so, yes, they should join a conference or be ineligible for the CFP.
