Jimbo Fisher reveals what he learned from TCU last season, pokes fun at local team

Texas A&M head football coach Jimbo Fisher poked fun at TCU when asked about the local team during his Fort Worth A&M Club speaking engagement Wednesday.

“They stayed healthy. They had a lot of experience. They got to where they’ve got to get to. And then when they got to the SEC, it changed, didn’t it? When they got to the SEC, it changed,” Fisher said during the Q&A portion of the Coach’s Night event, which was held at Billy Bob’s Texas.

Fisher laughed while making what was clearly a light-hearted joke about the Horned Frogs, referencing how Georgia pounced them, 65-7, in the national championship in January. He also acknowledged that his team could learn a lot from what TCU accomplished last season.

While the inexperienced Aggies went 5-7 and dropped five of their seven one-possession games, the seasoned Horned Frogs finished 13-2 and won six of their seven one-score games. Fisher pinpointed what he felt made the difference for TCU, along with how A&M can look to emulate that success in 2023.

“They found those inches. We let them slip,” Fisher said. “In 2020, we made all of those plays. In 2022, we didn’t make those plays. They made them last year. They found the inches. They found the chemistry.


“The secret to it is no secret. … There is no coaching you put on it. It is about doing what you have to do each and every day to create the habits, so when the pressure time comes, they did.

“It is like when they ran on the field and kicked the field goal (against Baylor as time expired). There were like four or five games that went down to the wire. But give them credit. That is a credit to their culture, the team and the camaraderie. They found the inches when they had to find the inches. That is what happened. That is why they ended up where they ended up.”
