Such an awful take. 2000s Rice >>>> 2022 ECU.

He had an excellent year, IMO! The challenge is sustaining success because A&M fans will expect it annually.

2000s Rice wouldn’t have been possible without 1997 Rice making their school’s first CWS. Look at the trajectory of ECU the past 6 years. Very similar. Rice hadn’t ever even made the NCAAT until 1995. ECU made a couple tournaments, now three straight regional hosts and three straight supers. And if they beat Texas and make the CWS, I think you’d be reaching if you tried to argue they were some one-off overrated program that should have been a cakewalk for Texas. ECU is a top 8 seed for a reason. They can’t build into a perennial powerhouse like Rice without growing to get to that point.

This will also likely expedite the ballpark expansion projects

I think Alaska was a bit hard on you. What you said was substantively stupid, but it WAS reasonably well-written stupidity.

That’s a fair assessment. They could become a powerhouse, but they aren’t one now. That’s why its not an apt comparison.

If you look at Rice’s path and their path, it very much is. Rice was a nobody until they weren’t, just like ECU

Everyone said the same thing about Coastal Carolina until they won the national title. You don’t need to be some big name school from a power conference to be an elite baseball team or program. And every program has to take the next step eventually. If ECU takes theirs today, that doesn’t mean Texas lost to some team they shouldn’t have. ECU is hosting the super for a reason

But, the longhorn was trying to argue that 2022 ECU were like the Rice teams that beat A&M in Super Regionals in the 2000s. Those teams were very much in the middle of Rice’s success, not as they were arriving on the scene in 97. Coastal also hasn’t made it out of a regional since they won it all. The Rice program in the 2000s was perennially a powerhouse.

To say that ECU is the next 2000s Rice is a bold take. Yes they can’t get to that level without making the CWS first but how many programs like ECU get to this level and either plateau, just go back to being happy with tournament appearances, or the coach leaves and they flame out altogether?

Yes there are some that sustain success like CS Fullerton, Rice, Coastal Carolina etc. but those are usually the exception to the rule. I wish ECU the best and hope they reach that level but I wouldn’t bet the mortgage on it.

I’m not betting the mortgage on it because I think Godwin leaves for a bigger job before that happens.

I just realized he was an assistant on the 2001 Tulane team that beat LSU to go to Omaha. Sucked that my Tigers lost that Super.
But Skip made a classy move and went talk to Tulane after the game. Gave em a pep talk and what to expect in Omaha.

Pretty cool.

Solid hire

I was really impressed with aTm when they beat us 2/3 early in the season. They were very well coached. No major flaws. Seemed like we hit it into every single one of their shifts

This is why they're winning. They don't know they're aggy. Just a bunch of guys transferring in that haven't yet learned aggy gonna aggy.

Schlossnagle can go 2&Q and get a big raise and coast the next decade without winning anything. If he wins it all this year, they'll give him the keys to the best glory hole bathroom the milkmen have on campus and Jimbo's "20__" plaque.

Schloss beat talented A&M teams so many times while at TCU that A&M fans could clearly see he was a top tier coach.

So when we finally moved on from Childress, he was the top of the list. Glad it worked out with his timing/interest. But it was after years of waiting…

I’m sorry we know how to retain our coaches unlike some schools

No amount of money in the world was keeping DriFit/DriBrisket at BlowU

Despite struggling last season, I was more surprised about Childress finally being let go than Schloss being hired. Sticking it to TCU was just a bonus.

exactly...i fricking hate A&M with a burning passion...but I knew he would be a great hire from day 1. I will say i am really glad he didnt get Zach DeChant to follow him as S&C coach of throwers as that would have made him even better.

I hate that A&M got him, but its kind of hard to not acknowledge the job he has done and prolly will continue to do.

I still think Johnson was a great hire for LSU, but hard not to like Schloss for sure.
