Who gets "likes" on Facebook is hardly a good judge of fandom. Facebook isn't even a place I would think most college football fans necessarily spend a lot of time.
Here is a much more scientific study from the NYT:

I won't argue that Texas has more casual fans than A&M but I will disagree the divide is some massive chasm, it has also closed considerably in the last year and with A&M in the SEC and Texas in the Big Joke the roles may reverse as they did in the late '80s and early '90s. You couldn't find anyone wearing Texas gear back then while you had A&M stuff everywhere.
The point though is that A&M would certainly not get steamrolled by Texas in recruiting because of popularity. It's just a foolish and uninformed statement.

texas and A&M have their hardcore fanbases, but texas is full of "swing" fans, for lack of a better way of putting it, I guess
Let's just hope they believe is practicing safe fandom. You never know what you might catch, changing partners like that...

I'm not sure about that study, that showed Auburn as having the largest fanbase in the SEC. It seems quite clear they were using some very large assumptions themselves.
Facebook has about 1/2 the US population as users. That's a large enough grouping for a very valid statistical analysis; a LOT larger than the polls used to dictate politics and a lot of other things.
Regardless, my point doesn't really change. Even if you win plenty of these battles, you're still talking about turning college football into a monetary bidding war. The absolute destruction of parity and obliteration of amateur athletics.
Are we talking a monetary cap, so that smaller schools don't get railroaded? Will there be blocks on transfers, or will we truly be "free market" and open up transfers to any school, and let other schools actively reach out to players? Nothing stops a recruiter from emailing me, even though I'm gainfully employed. Are you willing to engage in a bidding war for your best athletes? What's to stop schools from simply "running up the price"? What's A&M's limit for a JFF? 10 million? 20?

As it is, here in Alabama, we only see 2-3 numbers on retail jerseys at most per season. That's usually based on popularity and most of the time its only QB and RB numbers. So some All-American DL or LB walks into Academy Sports and doesn't see his number but sees his teammates'. He also sees them walking around with money simply due to their position while he goes home with nothing. A WR could get mad at his QB for not giving him enough passes, thus not raising his profile to the level warranting high jersey sales. A retailer could sell some 5 Star recruit's jersey before he's ever played a down while another player who's a starter might be seeing a dime. It has tons of potential to create dissention in the lockerroom. Not to mention if these kids need all of this money, then they'll probably go to a school that will get them paid the most. Hell, a high profile player at a small school could transfer to another school just so he could see higher returns for his jersey.
Its Pandora's Box....and we're doing it so a few athletes out of thousands can get money on top of the free education/boarding/meals/clothes that they already receive.

i haven't read this whole thread....but has anyone mentioned the irony in Time Magazine writing an article about how players need to be paid because colleges use college players likness to make money.......while Time magazine uses a college players likeness to sell magazines?

And ESPN profits from all the circus they stir up, while bitching about players getting paid, and players still get nothing for it.

My issue is if you want them to get paid then how much? Are we talking a few thousand dollars for the season? A couple thousand per game? Should the starters make more than the back ups and scout team? Is there a limit to how much they can make from jersey sales and signing autographs? It becomes a huge cluster frick when taking all of these things into account.
