Source: #Sooners special teams analyst Jay Nunez is leaving Oklahoma to join the Alabama staff as special teams coordinator.

He’d left his role as assistant head coach at Eastern Michigan to join the OU staff in 2022. It’s not immediately clear who will replace him in Norman.

Breaking: I can confirm that special teams analyst Jay Nunez is moving on from Oklahoma to join the staff at Alabama

Nunez had been with OU for the last two seasons after coming over from Eastern Michigan

@ParkerThune had it first #Sooners

The Sooners finished sixth in net kickoff return yardage in the Big 12 in 2023; 10th in punt return yardage; 11th in field goal percentage in 2023; and eighth in net punting.

Oklahoma has already removed his bio info from the university page.

I can see it now: Bama misses game-winning field goal in close loss in Norman

What was the skill level of your kicker and punter?

We finished 94th in SP last season. Was a terrible season for SP all season long.

I'd put it mostly on personnel. Kicker was arse and punter was meh. Punt returner couldn't seem to stop muffing punts.

So mostly personnel issues, yes, but Nunez seemed to refuse to make any personnel changes all season long when SP kept hurting us over and over. He kept trotting the same problem children out there game after game all season long much to our frustration.

Nunez was an analyst so did not coach on game days. He did on non game days though so it was basically his baby. We improved his first year and regressed some his second.

My understanding is he will be your ST coach (not an analyst).

We changed punters and the second one was great - but Jay waited way too long to make the change. We never changed our FG kicker and he was crap.

I dunno how he's going to fit on the staff because Alabama also just hired Inge to be a LB coach.

I don't think we had another FG kicker to change to, just to be fair.

But he did leave Freeman out there all season long only to watch him muffs punts and hurt the team.

Was just coming to post this. So I guess he will be an analyst there, maybe got a pay bump? The LB coach hire puts Bama at capacity for on field coaches.

Wasn’t Deboer at Eastern Michigan too? If so that may be why as Nunez came from there.

Yeah, I think it must be some pre-existing relationship. Coaches seem to love working with DeBoer because one guy left a head coaching job to be his DC and a lot of his Washington offensive staff came with him.

The other question, how was Bama’s STs this past year or two?

You're understanding is wrong.

He isn't getting an on-field role.
