Both the saints and Dolphins got the same medical report on Brees. Payton chose to go after Brees full throttle, Saban didn't. It's absolutely comical that anyone thinks team doctors could stop Saban from signing who he wanted. The guy bent Wayne Huizinga over in getting every thing he wanted to agree to coach with the Dolphins; but team doctors could stop him from signing the QB he wanted?? Saban attempted to low ball Brees with the contract offer, thinking the uncertainty with New Orleans following Katrina gave them the upper hand (and Brees has acknowledged all things being equal he likely would have signed with Miami). Payton made it clear he was all in on Brees, and the rest is history. For me personally its been the quintessential mixed bag. As a lifelong Saints fan it was glorious; as an LSU fan, it was torture watching Saban become the hands down greatest coach in CFB history.

So you are stating what you think as fact, and the people who covered the Dolphins are wrong. Saban stated as one of the main reasons for leaving the Dolphins was not having control over his teams player personal.

That is, in fact, how Nick has spun it. He isn't one to readily acknowledge his mistakes, I think that's fairly well accepted. There were numerous reporters who covered Miami that took issue with that excuse. People can believe what they want. I choose to believe that medical personnel did not have as much control in the Miami organization as the guy who pretty much had a blank check from Huizinga to coach the Dolphins.

Brees certainly didn't feel like Saban wanted him:
quote:
Brees had significant interest on the table from the Saints. But he wanted to find out if Saban had the same faith in him that (Sean) Payton and Mickey Loomis had in New Orleans. So Brees picked up the phone and called Saban, who told him the Miami team doctors believed Brees had a 25 percent chance to come back and be the same quarterback, or better, that he'd been before the shoulder surgery.
According to the book, Brees said to Saban: "Coach, I know what your doctors believe about me. My question is, what do you believe?''
Wrote Brees: "Nick Saban paused. That was really all I needed to hear. His pause told me everything. 'Well, Drew,' he said, 'I would still love to have you, but I have to trust what our medical people are saying ...' He went on from there, like he was reading from a script. But I was starting to tune out. By then I had all the information I needed. I had made my decision.''
Brees told Saban thanks, and he'd be going to New Orleans, even though telling Saban that might kill his negotiating position with the Saints.
As Brees told me, "The impression I get from the Dolphins was I should feel lucky they were even looking at me. It just wasn't a welcoming feeling.''

This is not an argument from me. I was just curious about why it seemed you put Brees not going to the Dolphins on Saban. I looked up several articles and they all said doctor would not clear. Thanks to Sidewalktigers response and the quote from what I guess is a book written by Drew Brees or cowritten he said this
quote:

From everything I've ever read, both team's medical staffs gave the same prognosis on Brees but the Dolphins didn't want to take the risk.
I think Saban's excuse is somewhat bogus since I've never heard of a medical staff making the final call, plus his quote makes it seem like he's the one making the decision.
It just seems like one team was willing to take a massive gamble and one wasnt. Nothing wrong with it, hindsight is 20/20.

I could certainly be wrong. I've just never bought the, "well I couldn't sign him because the doctors said no" excuse. I would have linked it like Sidewalk did, but I read all that crap so long ago I forget where TBH. Like I said for me it was a mixed bag, as a Saints fan it was great; as an LSU fan it was awful.

It's very common for the medical staff to tell the GM their yeah or nay on a player. If not, why have the player take a physical. I don't know if Saban was the GM or not. If so, yeah it is kinda on him. Either way Brees had some issue and was a gamble. But the story just keeps changing as time goes.

Saban was able to make chicken salad out of chicken shite....and be assured, the Dolphins were pure shite. It's OK, you can admit it, Saban is the best coach you've ever seen.
