Read the rule book before you start a dumb arse thread.
(When any part of the ball carrier’s body, except his hand or foot, touches the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his body, except his hand or foot [Exception: The ball remains alive when an offensive player has simulated a kick or is in position to kick the ball held for a place kick by a teammate. The ball may be kicked, passed or advanced by rule] (A.R. 4-1-3-I).

CLM has now done it 3 times & it's never been blown dead. OP has his ref sources. A friend of mine who calls MAC games & has been a college ref for 13 yrs said he's never heard of this rule or it being called. FWIW: it's also a major rule violation, on punt returns, for the receiving team to block a defender in the back. Call it a wash if you insist your source is better than mine.
