Wow! The cost to go play in a bowl game cost Indiana 44,000 dollars for the whole thing from flying and part ground travel, food, and some other expenses.

I mean did they have table service every damn meal?

Doesn't make any sense. The SEC pools all
bowl money and then divides it up with all it's members. They also subsidize any school that claims a loss.Im assuming the
BIG does the same.
Bowl game accounting always seem to be screwy. It also wouldn't surprise me if a ton of admin employees all piled on the gravy train and were part of the expenses

Holy shite! They must’ve picked up the tab for fans too.

Teams have to buy their allotment of tickets so if they buy 20k and only sell 10k (doubt Indiana has a big traveling family base) so they have to eat the difference. Most SEC teams probably sell all of their tickets or come very close to it.

But that wasn't in $2 million+ in expenditures.
And bowl revenue is usually put into a big
pile and divided equally.Maybe this was an expense check that came up short.

I would have put them on a greyhound. They had plenty of time.

I can't say I'm all that surprised, I still remember when UConn lost even though it got to play in a BCS/NY6 bowl (Fiesta Bowl) back in 2010.

I didn't think Indiana would travel very well, but I was at the game and there was a LOT of red. I'd say about 35-40% of the attendance.

Its the same for all conferences. It did not cost IU anything. It may have cost the Big 10 something toward its ultimate collective payout, but I doubt that as well. CFB is a big business. The BIG no doubt generated much more monies from IU for their bowl attendance than is reflected in the "bowl payout." For instance, each conference gets another 300k per bowl eligible team that is in good APR standing. So, even if not another $ was raised through other contracts, sales or promotions, the reported 44k loss was actually a 256k gain for the conference pool.

Correct. This is difficult math for some.

I question the ability to budget for these trips.
These are college kids. They don’t need lobster and steak every meal. Also maybe the walk-ons don’t need to go.
Maybe I’m being a cynical a-hole but I just don’t see how they spend this much money on a trip to Florida.

Yes,I get all that and if you read the article it says the bowl payout was made to the conference and then distributed to Indiana. The actual "bowl payout" from the
Gator Bowl is somewhat irrelevant and has nothing to do with the payout Indiana received from the BIG... should have been alot more money with all the BIG teams in bowls and one in the playoffs.
Yep,so the article doesn't make much sense.

These bowl committees rape the schools. If we ever break away from the NCAA we need to drop the bowls too.

P5 conferences are paying out 30 to 55 million per team each year. I don't think the NCAA, tv contracts, or bowls are going anywhere, anytime soon.

Did they fly down weeks in advance for that kind of meal tab?

The SEC only distributes the money equally, after they pay the tier bowl bonus payouts.
In real dollars LSU got more money than UGA, who got more money than A&M who got more than Arkansas, In addition the SEC pay bowl travel expenses prior to distribution.
Prior to the 15 way split of the pool money
LSU was +$4.125 million
UGA was +$2.025 million
A&M was +$1.5 million
Arkansas 0

The other item from that article that indicates shady accounting is the $250K for Bowl Unis and Apparel, the existing shoe & Apparel deal should provide that stuff at much less than full retail price to the University
College Athl Depts are known to use shady accounting to do everything in their power to NOT show any profits on paper to stem the pressure of Revenue Athletes asking for a fair percentage of what they gross
