I didn't think Indiana would travel very well, but I was at the game and there was a LOT of red. I'd say about 35-40% of the attendance.

I wasn't too surprised they did travel well since that was their best season since the 1990s and they had the chance to prove their worth to an SEC team.

I question the ability to budget for these trips.

These are college kids. They don’t need lobster and steak every meal. Also maybe the walk-ons don’t need to go.

Maybe I’m being a cynical a-hole but I just don’t see how they spend this much money on a trip to Florida.

Then have fewer bowl games

It would be duplicitous to tell Players that the Bowl is a reward for a good season, then cut corners financially and have the Players staying in a Motel6 eating Beenie-Weenie to save pennies for the Athl Dept

There has to be a middle ground between too much spending and a "nice reward" for the Players

Interesting didn't know they had a tiered
system.

Interesting that

The CFB playoffs also kicks in a $3,000 per athlete travel allowance and it's says here the travel expense amount is different than $2.1.Maybe the conference takes a cut

Wow! The cost to go play in a bowl game cost Indiana 44,000 dollars for the whole thing from flying and part ground travel, food, and some other expenses.

Sounds like they needed a better planning committee. It does not cost over 2 million dollars to send a team to a bowl. Whoever was in charge of planning it all was too fricking excited about their first bowl in forever to properly budget.

That said, schools lose money sending teams to bowls all the time. Not sure why this is news unless you're a salty Hoosier fan.

They don't in the SEC and if the BIG has the same policy I don't think any of their
schools do as well.

Any school in the SEC gets a subsidy to cover any bowl game those in the red.

quote:

The New Year's Six bowl games are part of the playoff rotation that helps subsidize the bowl expenses of teams in lesser bowl games through revenue sharing with all 10 conferences and independents in major college football.  For example, the combined bowl “profit” for all schools and conferences was $448 million in 2017-18 after subtracting combined bowl expenses, according to the most recently available expense forms.

The other item from that article that indicates shady accounting is the $250K for Bowl Unis and Apparel, the existing shoe & Apparel deal should provide that stuff at much less than full retail price to the University

College Athl Depts are known to use shady accounting to do everything in their power to NOT show any profits on paper to stem the pressure of Revenue Athletes asking for a fair percentage of what they gross

It took you longer to find this thread than and discredit them losing money than i thought it would. Should the players have to help pay the tab? Were supposed to be splitting this whole profit/expenses thing up right?

Think about this Math for a minute:

85 scholly players
+
25 walk ons
+
30 Coaches & Support Staff that get Bowl Gear but not Unis since they don't play
=
140 total on a typical Bowl Team Traveling Party that gets Unis + "Athletic gear"

If I round up to 150 just to give the benefit of the doubt to the Athl Depts shady accounting practices that would equal

$250,000 divided by
150 players & coaches
=
$1,667 per person in the FB Program's Traveling Party

No way does any College spend almost $1,700 per person on Unis + Apparel for a Bowl Game

Athl Depts practice some shady arse accounting, so they can always say "we barely break-even, or we're losing money"

What did it cost Tennessee to win? Or did they make money on the deal? Some of these you can see how teams lose money. I'm surprised Gator Bowl is so far down the list.

How long were they in Jacksonville for the game? Did they take the players to other venues ie. touristy things?
Did they get new uniforms with Gator Bowl patches? Clemson pays about $2600 per player, pads , helmet etc per player.

I mean did they have table service every damn meal?

Roughly 160 players assuming all made the trip. Say what 30-40 coaches/staff/etc?

Around 1600 a person. If you were there an entire week and had 3 full meals each day that’s 75 dollars a meal.

That’s insane.

The headline cornfused me. It made it seem like having a loss cost them $44K. Win or lose I suspect their check from the bowl would have been the same.
