That's true. I forgot about the '99. But, still, the dynasty was coronated by fans/media well before that one ever happened.

it would be very difficult for any coach to come in and keep the thing going with the level of success Saban has had
That's fair.
I just think it's interesting that some would argue LSU was a dynasty for the seven years after Saban left, yet also simultaneously suggest that Alabama could not do the same.
No one knows, of course, but I think the most realistic scenario is continued success, just perhaps not as consistent.

They got rubber stamped because of their consistency in an era without a lot of it. Miami fell off a cliff after 1994 until the 2000s. Nebraska was really the only other program to win at an elite level every single year (with the exception of 1998) for any considerable stretch of time like FSU did back then. FSU finishing in the top 5 from 1987-2000 was ridiculous.

I think you probably could feasibly argue that, but like lsufball19 said, Clemson had a similarly successful run and we don't really consider it as one.
Clemson isn't considered because of their weak conference, but you're right, they probably should be.

I really can't answer why this is the case, but it's certainly an interesting question.
I would say LSU over that period was in "Elite" status. I think another NC in that time frame would be enough for me to use the dynasty label.

I've argued here before that FSU's continued success in a perceivably weak ACC led to the creation of a championship playoff (the BCS), which led to an era of domination by the SEC.
Whether they really were that elite or not in the 90s, I think we ultimately have Florida State to thank perhaps the most for shaping what this conference became.

A win in 2011 NC game, would have sealed it.

In the 20 seasons since our 2002 championship, we have:
- 2 championships
- 5 championship game appearances
- 17 ten win seasons (really 18 without Kevin Warren being an idiot)
- 15 top five finishes
- 13 bowl wins
- 16 wins in The Game
Not sure there's anyone I'd trade with, even if we stretch that to 100 years.

Since the current dynasty is Alabama, let’s see what Saban has done to to earn Alabama as the dynasty in chief.
1. 6 Natties
2. 3 Heisman Trophy winners
3. Every class recruited by Saban won a Natty, some won 2 or 3.
After Bama won it’s Natty in 2009 and Heisman Trophy, no one was talking about a dynasty. Dynasty’s are built over time. Will it happen for GA? Perhaps, but not not tomorrow if they win.

In a sport where 2-3% of the competitors play in a playoff, no, I don't view MNCs and 4-9 seasons as anything to be envious of. I wish we'd have won in 2020, and that's about as far as I care about Alabama's recent run.

Split Titles in 1990 and 1991 led to the Bowl Coalition (and later the Bowl Alliance), which had the same idea as the BCS, they just couldn't get the Big10/Pac10 and Rose Bowl on board. The BCS got those on board and the rest is history. It had little to nothing to do with FSU dominating a weak conference. Hell, FSU's run ran began 5 or so years before they joined the ACC.
People wanted a unified and unanimous national champion and a game matching #1 and #2 to decide it. The AP tried to get cute in 2003, which is why they were removed from the BCS formula and replaced with the Harris Poll.

Two In A row isn’t a dynasty, but very rare. To me a dynasty is 4 or more NCs in a 10 or so year period.
I would also call 3 in a row a dynasty, but it’s never happened.

No. Dynasty is at least 3 championships. Over what time frame is whats debatable.
5 years? Definitely. 10 years? Probably.
