Absolutely no defense. The SEC, and college football at large, has become arena football. I'm sure it's exciting for some of y'all, but I for one like it when both sides of the football show up to play every once in a while. This is what Saban warned about and he was maligned by trolls who were saying the man was just pissed that his four and five star athletes were struggling against the HUNH and (later on) the RPO.

I think Saban had a point. He saw football devolving into basketball and asked if that's truly what we wanted. I sure as hell didn't but I'm probably in the minority.

Football is “soft” in the youth leagues and high school now. Likely due to “safety” issues. These are players that coaches have to recruit from. It’s no surprise that this is seen at the college level.

Get off my lawn.

But yeah I'm with you. Lately, I've been watching some choice SEC games from the 2005-2009 time frame on Youtube. That brand of football was superior to this. But change happens whether we like it or not.

I thought the same when I saw the final scores on the game board. Just a couple of years ago it was 10-7 kind of battles. We are playing a different kind of football for sure.

Direct result of all the rule changes over the last 20 years to protect offenses/points. Really cut into the evolution of talent and what kind of body types play in what spots on the field now. I'm a firm believer this is why football looks so much different now.

The main problem is that rules allow downfield blocking on a pass play... supposedly within three yds of the LOS. However in fact the refs hardly ever call it at any depth. Pick plays are run against the secondary constantly. TEs routinely level defensive backs 10 yds downfield.

With the RPO, gratuitous pick plays, and downfield blocking allowed against the DBs and LBs, whatever you coach a DB to do is wrong.

The pros only allow downfield blocking within one yard of the LOS. This allows the defense to read a play. The pro refs call picks too (sometimes). Perhaps that rule change would slow things down.

I agree. I like the "Grind your opponent down into the dust." variety. "Impose your will on them. Demoralize them"

Ok, you can be "hard" lining up in the I Formation, grinding out yards against stacked defenses.. Enjoy the 30 point arse whipping
Even Saban has moved on from that thinking

I don't think so. I think he adapted to the changes in the game but that he wishes the rules were more balanced in terms of favoring offense/defense.

We are rebuilding from the worst 8 year stretch in the history of the program. We couldn't get any pass rush or slow down their running game at all. So yeah, they put up a ton of points on us. If they had been running the wishbone back in the 70s they would have put up a ton of points on us.

The week before we held the Vols to 13 and won 24-13. Its a question of match ups. We matched up poorly with Florida and they lit us up. We matched up great with the Vols and they didn't.

Im sure he does, He's a defensive guy. But wasn't too long ago Bama lined up with a Fullback leading offtackle.

Now... Where is it?

No, he adapted to the rules to remain successful. That isn’t the same as changing because you like the new way better.

He honestly does create alot of this still just by way of misdirection and delayed handoffs out of the gun. Its just a more deceptive way of getting blockers in space than coming out in a heavier personal set. Plus it allows you to keep the d from substituting if you don't have to keep taking a traditional full back on/off the field

Going through the Muschamp years I thought I would take this over the defensive battles, but not so sure now.

Im sure most Coaches want to win games by lining up and mauling ppl for 3-4 yards a carry. Saban hates the monster he helped create, now he has to change too to stay ahead.
Teams around him had to change their thinking to compete with his teams.

The die has been cast and the game of football has been solved.

If you watched Trask last night, you saw he wasn't only finding blown coverages, he was putting the ball on a pin over 2 DBs for pro-body WRs to just go up and get it.

The only solution to this is to play man defense with pro-level WRs and pro-level DL, but as we saw with Burrow, some of these QBs just process info too fast for the blitz to ever find them before one of their 6-5 240 lb monsters gets open against a DB giving up 4 inches and 40 lbs.

Mullen is running an offense that is nothing like what he ran at Utah, Florida, or MSU previously and runs contrary to almost everything about his/Meyer's offensive philosophy which was very old school run oriented, clock control. The math is just not on that side when you have a clear advantage at QB and WR/TE.

It's gone because it's not as effective as other strategies under the current rules. Nobody is disputing that.

Nobody is denying he has changed his offense to suit/better take advantage of the current rules. The rant the op references is about how the rules should be re-evaluated so that football wouldn't evolve into what it is today. But saban is also competitive and smart enough to adapt to the rules even if he doesn't like them.
