All those people, all those rabid high schools, all those 3-5 star recruits, and the in state universities underachieve so much.

Don't give me that "everyone is picking players from here" crap. Everyone is in Florida and California as well but Miami, FSU, Florida, and USC have had some great runs of dominance.

Not to mention schools in the SWC were the most notorious for cheating.

For a state full of talent, it manifests soft as hell at the college level more often than not. There are clear exceptions, but the overall lack of regular competitiveness among TX universities is astonishing.

It is truly an "all hat, no cattle" scenario

Hmmm, I'd put Georgia first, then Texas and Florida both just behind -- at least those states have natties in the last 41 years.

Georgia Tech won in 1990. I don't see Georgia at the same level as Florida, Texas, and California though.

California- 39.5 mil
Texas- 29.2 mil
Florida 21.5 mil
Georgia 10.7 mil

Obviously the bottom 3 states care way more about football than California but they have to be in the conversation for the absurd amount of population.

20th Century
1980 Georgia
1990 Georgia Tech

21st Century
2004 USC
2005 Texas
2006 Florida
2008 Florida
2013 FSU

One of these states is not like the others..

Good catch — then yes, I believe it is Texas, especially since football is what they pride themselves on.

Your examples are the state of Florida and USC?

That’s not exactly gonna hold weight right now. FSU and Miami are historically bad, SC just fired their coach.

SC’s last title was before Texas won.

The state of Texas CFB isn’t great right now, but outside of UT, which is the underperforming school? TCU has overachieved under Patterson, Baylor seems to be rebounding under Aranda, and has come off some major successes with their last two non-interim coaches. Texas Tech should be a bit better, but that’s a program that also overachieved under Leach. That leaves aggy. And we already know the situation there.

Again…you’re turning a state of Texas problem into a UT problem.

The #2 Flagship school in Texas is A&M. They have one title since 1939. Idk who you want to call 2nd fiddle in Florida but Miami, Florida, and Florida State all have achieved more than A&M. Cal, Stanford and UCLA are all comparable to A&M. All 3 have some really old titles and some good years sprinkled in after their old titles.

And for the state of Texas that prides itself on Football while the populations of Florida and California isn't as football centric as Texas is.

I know…funny, isn’t it?

“Football centric” does what for the individual athlete. Small towns shut down for games. Stadiums across the state will have 5,000 or more fans for games. The Jumbotron will glow across the night sky. Money comes in, money is spent on facilities.

These are still kids. I’m not sure how much training it would take to make a kid from West Texas compete with a kid from South Florida.

Playing devil’s advocate here…but what about being “football centric” will make a kid play better than his capabilities?

ETA: and yes, Ags are an embarrassment when you use them as a measuring stick.

Money, year round training, higher level of competition to improve your skills against. Playing high level High School Football in Texas a kid is going to be more prepared to play at the college level than kids in smaller states where the population isn't football crazy.

I think all of those things end up helping max out the talent of kids currently in HS. I wouldn’t necessarily think this makes them better in college. Obviously, you’ll see the inflated star ratings, but I think those have been flawed for a long time anyway when you consider certain schools get special treatment.
