Spot on. I'm the same way. Never understood why all the people here in Baton Rouge were pulling for Alabama over Notre Dame.

Wierd or not it's the prevailing model in CFB. Lots of reasons the SEC is the way it is, but those other conferences/schools/fans don't have to understand it. That's part of what makes the SEC the SEC.

Rooting for the SEC is the last socially acceptable way people from the south can show their pride in the area where they grew up. Its really nothing more than us rubbing it in the north's face that even though we lost the war they suck so much that we don't want anything to do with them. We relive the battles of the Civil War every time we play a team from the north and when we usually win the games then this is a whole lot of pay back.

It's because we're still butthurt over losing the war, and this is how we compensate against the Yankee oppression.

If you know anyone who went to a Big10 or PAC12 school they usually hate teams from the south in general. I think I find myself pulling for the other SEC teams because I know it get chaps their arse.

I am Georgia first, SEC second...then I pull for anybody to beat Miami, Notre Dame, USCw and Ohio State. Do most on the board feel this way, or is it my imagination, and why do you think SEC fans are willing to pull for rivals in big games?
I'm exactly that way save it's Ole Miss first though.
Well there are some exception that come with some LSU & MSU games as well.

I actually find myself rooting against SEC teams in OOC games because SEC fans have exaggerated the superiority of the conference to the point of nauseation.
College football as a whole was down last year, but LSU, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina were not the teams they were hyped up to be.

Two words: Southern Pride. I will root for other SEC teams against outsiders because I always have. We can talk shite towards each other all we want but I'll be damned if an outsider will insult us. Frick the other conferences. That it all

I hope Auburn loses every game they play. I hope Lsu loses every game they play except the Auburn game. I really dont like for Tennessee to win to many games. Im fine with everyone else winning as long as it doenn't hurt Alabama's chances...

I think there is a lot of truth to the statement that the SEC tends to root for the other conference members due to southern pride. As an ACC fan, I observe that ACC fans don't stick together as much as the deep southern based SEC.
There is some ACC football togetherness since Lord knows we need it. Basketball, not so much. I've been at NCAA tournament bb games, where Duke, UVA, etc. fans loudly cheer against UNC. I've done the same when Duke plays.

I was somewhat of an SEC homer before I started visiting/posting on message boards. The only team I truly hated was bama. I actually liked Notre Dame and Tennessee to a point just because of how much bama fans that I knew hated them. Now, not only do I pull for bama to lose every game... I do the same with UGA, LSU, aTm, Arky, and the MS schools - mostly just from their message board posters.

I'm sorry we all owned that arse last year. You will be back........someday

Exactly my point. Fans of nothing teams talk trash after beating the worst team that AU has ever produced. I used to almost feel sorry for fans of these teams... now I know that they deserve the opportunity that they get almost every bowl season to watch other teams play.

Southerners do have a pride in their heritage. Combine that with the love of the game and the SEC becomes "our league" and we defend it. Do you ever recall seeing or hearing about Yankee Pride? I don't.

But I've watched my team in a bowl game the last three years...

frick the SEC
Last year's title game was a bitch to pick a side for but I eventually just settled with pulling for a meteor to strike the stadium

frick all of you.
That said, I do like the natty streak, so I did cheer for Bama against Notre Dame. Otherwise, y'all can all eat a duffel bag's worth of dicks. Seriously.

There's definitely some truth to this.
It's more than just the war too. It's this idea that the South is inherently inferior to the rest of the country, an idea which is perpetuated by pop culture. It's sorta like "well y'all might have Wall Street and Silicon Valley, but we've got motherfricking football."
