Is the “SEC is Best” narrative fading with NIL?

Legitimate question. Aside from Texas and TA&M, there are several big time programs around the country that could find more money in their sofa cushions than most SEC teams have in total. Unless some type of framework or a cap gets put in place, the Ohio States, Michigans, Penn States and even USCs of the world would seem to have an edge (of course, they would need the right coaching).

Yeah, NIL has brought down the iron curtain the SEC had over the massive talent pool in the South

BIG10 will get powerful.
Tons of money up there.
Tons of money up there.

We are out of money. Everyone drives electric now.

Yep.
Money drives everything now. And the Big 10 made moves to secure the biggest richest programs coast to coast.
SEC will be a regional also-ran conference in the not too distant future.

All of this.
Southern powers had an iron funnel coming in every year.
That's over.

The problem with the AEC in 2024 was disappointing QB play or QB injuries. QB is the most important position by far, and a number of SEC teams really struggled at QB. Whereas OSU, Oregon, PSU, Indiana, Miami, Arizona had good consistent QB play.
Pavia improved Vandy, Sellers stabilized South Carolina, Florida got it figured out at QB. 2025 should be interesting with the portal QBs coming in.

Let’s pump the brakes just a bit.
Michigan won the title last year. It took Harbaugh 7 years to build that program up. They won the title and then fell off a cliff.
Before that, the SEC won three straight titles.
UGA won back to back titles in 2021-2022. The LSU won one in 2019. Texas is in the final four this year.
Ohio State has been a staple in the playoffs (6 appearances - third to Clemson and Alabama)
Notre dame made the playoffs in 2018 and 2020 (with LSU’s own Brian Kelly)
Other than Penn State making the final four, there isn’t anything crazy about the remaining teams.

This isn’t NIL. This is straight pay for play and it will eventually be regulated, probably with collective bargaining and revenue sharing. Every coach and administrator knows there will have to be regulations, same as all professional leagues know it and have it, to be viable long term. A few teams will buy titles till it gets fixed.

It’s the portal. Not NIL. It’s spreading the talent around and robbing the SEC teams of quality depth. Also making the on field product almost unbearable to watch
