playing devils advocate:
- The SEC wasn't 1/5th what it is today in the 90's. NOT. EVEN. CLOSE.
- He is not an incredible recruiter and Florida recruited for him in the 90's because of less competition in the SEC and South (obviously UM and FSU were great too).
- Bob Stoops was his defensive coordinator and recruiting ace.
- Fun N Gun won't work anymore, why hasn't he adapted and had the same success?
All that said, he's an incredible coach that has taken a JOKE of a program in USC and brought them to a very competitive level in the all powerful SEC.
In the SEC:
1. Saban
2. Spurrier
3. Miles
4. Richt
5. Boom
6. Freeze (could go up soon)

I honestly don't think there's that big of a difference in terms of coaching ability between Steve Spurrier in his prime and Bobby Petrino. If Petrino had taken over Florida in 1990, they would have been just as successful. And I don't see Spurrier doing any better at Louisville and Arkansas than Petrino did.

He's not what he was at Florida, but yes. Making USC consistently good is no small task.

quote:He's been able to keep some of the better players from SC in state and to come and play for USC instead go elsewhere such as UGa, UF, Tenn, UNC, Clemson, and so on. 4 years of getting SC's Mr. Football starting with Stephon Gilmore (10th overall pick), Lattimore, Clowney, and Shaq Roland last year. Other greats include Alshon, Melvin Ingram, and Chris Culliver.

And not only is he getting some of the better instate guys, he's also getting what he can (some lower rated recruits) and coaching them up. Just look at Ace Sanders from Florida- UF and FSU didn't want him. Well I bet they regret that now.
Now I know he can't get credit for 100% of this BUT its his job as the head coach to put guys in place that can do these things and can be great recruiters. He's certainly done that.
Another thing that's overlooked is that he runs a pretty clean program from what we can tell. He's only had a few bad apples (Stephen Garcia ring a bell) but overall nothing like some of the thugs we had with Lou Holtz. I'm very confident that we will never be in too much trouble with the NCAA under his command.

It could also be said that Lou Holtz laid the groundwork for Spurrier at South Carolina.

I think if a coach is judged by winning he is a pretty good coach unfortunately he has character flaws which makes it impossible to be a great coach ! Now a great coach wins and coaches quality to the human beings he is sending to the after football world ! That man is Les Miles !

If Steve Spurrier wins a National Championship at South Carolina he should be considered the best coach of this generation. Yes, better than Saban.
Taking SC to a National Title is more impressive than Saban taking Bama to 3 Championships.
...but, that's a big if.

He was at UF and didn't win three out of four NCs in a down period for SEC. But I pretty much agree, one at SoCar NC might be more of an accomplishment than 15 at Bama.

He won't. It's that simple. Steve spurrier will not win a national title at South Carolina.

People are ranking him ahead of Mark Richt and Les Miles, but at least they have SEC Championships.
This is what an internet fail looks like.

Silly statement. How old are you?

You really missed the boat on this one. Spurrier has been amazing on making sure his players are good citizens. Early on he had to discipline, suspend and expel numerous thugs recruited by Holtz, such as 5-star Demitris Summers. Since then, with his own players, USC is at the top for gps, graduation rate and fewest arrests. SOS runs a clean program focused on character. You can say he hung onto Garcia too long for all his ticky tacky BS, but he had nothing like Mathieu, Crowe or the rampant thuggery that doomed Auburn last year. Spurrier does it the right way.

Yeah, Mathieu isn't nearly as much of a mess as Garcia.

True, one of those guys could perform every week at a high level and the other, well one game a year.
