Is SEC basketball collectively underrated?

In my opinion, with the exception of Kentucky, the national media and college basketball analysts largely disregard the SEC teams and consider it an inferior conference.

Strangely enough, Kentucky has had some recent down years (for their standards at least), but I still think the SEC is a better conference than the credit given, and it over performs in the post season.

What do you think?

I think at this point it gets the respect it deserves. People don't look down on it and most agree that it's a deep league with good players and coaches, but somebody had to step up and be elite in March for it to take that next step. Right now there's a big group of S16/E8 type programs. Need a few to become Final 4/Championship programs.

It's light years better than it was a decade ago.

SEC basketball would have been taken to a new level with Beard at Texas. Unfortunately the SEC will remain in the dumps now

The issue is Vandy was red hot at the end of the season. The SEC identity problem would have been solved if we had gotten an invitation. We would have knocked UConn out of the gym.

SEC has great coaching and several programs are building strong reputations. Where we differ is we tend to have extremely athletic players who may be a tad raw compared to other conferences so we tend to focus on defense and running at a fast pace. Fans and players tend have a lower bball IQ compared to other conferences.

You have the talent without the coaching. I was surprised to see how many SEC schools have never been to a final 4 or even elite 8.

Of the Power 5 conferences, it's prolly 4th. Could make an argument for 3rd. It's properly rated.

The SEC coaching is pretty good at this point and the players are very good. Muss, Oats, Pearl, Buzz, Beard, Barnes, Jans are all very good college basketball coaches (and Gates appears to be but probably needs another year to truly earn that). And while Cal is a lightning rod, his resume is still pretty damn thick.

Throw in White and Stack (who other coaches all praise for his sets and structure) and that's a pretty good, relatively proven roster of coaches. Just leaves you with McMahon, Golden and Paris.

Just follow McMahon's lead and raid the Atlantic 10 conference for talent.

Basketball investment is going up in the SEC. Live sports is the media gravy train now and the SEC knows basketball is where they need to improve. Its already happening.
