Nicholls State is a middle tier school in the FCS Southland Conference. This year they were picked to finish 10th out of 11 teams in their conference. Jacksonville State, the team LSU beat 34-13 last Saturday, would rout Nicholls State. JSU beat Sam Houston State, the 2015 SLC champion and this year's preseason favorite, 62-10 in the FCS semifinals last year.

Teams do occasionally lay eggs, people forget the week before UGA did defeat a legit top 25 team IMO. This dawg team does have holes, I picked them to go 8-4 preseason and if the O-line does not step up it will be a long night in Columbia for UGA Sat. I'm frankly surprised the dawgs are favored, this game looks like a pick 'em.

Based on the transitive property then (which we all know is historically accurate as frick), Nicholls State is a touchdown better than North Carolina, would beat Illinois by 32 points at Illinois, and would demolish Murray State by 81 points.
We can revisit this thread on Sunday morning to see how Missouri stacks up to Nicholls.

Generally, I'd defend Georgia here. New coach, new QB, etc. But the defensive side of things was baffling. I doubt Kirby's system differs all that much from Pruitt, who, after all, got his start in the big-time under Saban. It's a little odd. But a couple early games are not a good measure of how a team will develop. I suspect that the original plan -- which was shot all to hell when Nicholls State gave them a tougher-than-expected game -- was to use that game as a testing ground, an important aspect for a first time head coach settling into the role. He couldn't very well do that against a much tougher (on paper) UNC, after all.

Smart might not be--smart. At least as a HC.
I hope I'm wrong but year one head coaches with defensive backgrounds tend to be very rigid and conservative.
After the debacle, Smart put all the blame on his players and none on the coaches. That type of reaction does not bode well for the future.

bullshite. His first sentence in the press conference was blaming himself and the coaching staff for not having the kids ready.
You are a dipshit idiot.

I actually go to school at Nicholls, and we are finally putting the pieces together. Our head coach is probably the best they have ever had, and he is a great recruiter. He specially a great recruiter in the state, where the past few coaches were not really good at it. They have also gain some pretty decent talent from transfers. Now I'm not saying that we are the best and we won't lose another game, or even better than Georgia, but Nicholls is definitely on the rise and will be better.

What did he actually say? Or deeprig can answer this, since he appears to have a potential difference of opinion here.

Not really. If you watched the game, their QB was throwing excellent balls, where only his receivers could get it, and the receivers weren't dropping them.
I don't care if you are Alabama or Troy or Nicholl's or Kennesaw State. If your quarterback does that, you are going to move the chains and score points.
It's not an indictment of Kirby's defense.
It's a credit to Nicholl's QB and receivers.

I don't have the transcript. You'll just have to either trust me or trust BitchKnot.

They had 111 passing yards.
They had 125 rushing yards.
The INT, fumble, and fumbled punt kept them in the game..not some offensive explosion.

No doubt, and you don't have to convince me of Kirby's bona fides. I already consider him an excellent defensive mind, which is why I considered it baffling.
Still, it's not quite as simple as that. A QB making excellent throws and receivers getting separation can be devastating, but there's so much more to the issue, especially against a team with considerably less talent. Were the linemen failing to get pressure on the QB? Were the DBs not jamming up the receivers? Did the LBs cut off short and intermediate routes effectively? Did the defense force Nicholls to take to the air, thus limiting their options and giving the defense a lot more leeway in coverage? The fact that it's a vastly less talented team certainly makes the preceding questions every bit as significant as the question of how well the QB was playing. Against similar talent levels, that explanation would be more meaningful. Not that it isn't meaningful here, just that there were so many other effective ways to control a hot QB in a mismatch than on a level playing field.

Nicholls is the weakest program in the state of Louisiana.
They played the game of the history for the program. The dawgs might have a few issues !
