A&M couldn't win a National Championship with Bear Bryant. So yes.

Starkville is not a shite hole. Said someone, at some point, possibly.

Mullen did a Great job at MSU. It was on the scale of Snyder at Kansas State. Florida got a great one.

Coaching at Texas A&M in the 1950s vs coaching at the University of Alabama at the same time?
Pfft.
Useless comparison.

The Bear Bryant Days at Aggieland, 1954 – 1957
quote:

The Bear had been hired to bring respectability back to A&M. It was a tough place to recruit players, since the Aggies were the cellar team in the Southwest Conference, there were no girls and it was mostly military with compulsory ROTC, including the athletes. It was often referred to as a “poor boys school” and a “cow college” and was the brunt of a lot of Aggie jokes. Also, the campus looked a little bit like a penitentiary.

When he arrived for spring training in ’54 he didn’t like what he saw. In those days there were actually two teams; freshman and varsity, each with their own scheduled games. While he could recruit new players they would not be eligible to play on the varsity squad until their sophomore year, so he was stuck with all the players from his predecessor. The Bear was not impressed and was determined to weed out the losers.

FTR, I have nothing but respect for MS State.

Battling college poverty at Texas A&M
quote:

As national student poverty rises, Texas A&M resource facilities are taking action to assist Aggies with financial and nutritional aid.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 34.7 percent of College Station’s population is living below the poverty line, with the highest number of people falling between the ages of 18 and 24. The issue of college poverty is more concentrated at A&M, according to Megan Ford, kinesiology junior and executive director of The 12th Can.

We’re above the state and national average for poverty, so one in five people in this area are food insecure, which is actually higher than most universities,” Ford said.

Holy shite, "12th Can!" I'll guffaw all afternoon, now.

We foolishly wouldn't let him cheat enough. SEC move is teaching our boosters valuable lessons.

Aggy was put on probation for offenses occurring under Paul Bryant, but he had already left town, leaving slack-jawed aggy holding the bag (literally).

Edit: My apologies, the transgressions happened while Tha Bar was still in College Station; aggy was banned from postseason play in 1956.

Yes though not close to as entertaining.
Fake army, dork traditions, revisionist history, misplaced pride despite never winning anything, mouthbreathing fans with hivemind, etc.
All ingredients in the recipe that makes aggy so hilarious.
