Let's be honest, Auburn has been shite on by the State of Alabama for not being Alabama for decades. Naturally that breeds resentment. Then consider that Alabama, not Auburn fans, are the ones making national headlines for criminal activity and trashy behavior.
Is it any surprise we don't want to be lumped in with those fans?
Yes, both fan bases have trashy elements. Neither Auburn, nor any other SEC school, has a trashy element that compares to Alabama's in size or intensity.

I still don't get why its such a big thing. I would totally take their fan base if it meant that our football program won as much as theirs

Let me give a run down of this thread.
Most Bama fans agree that they're equal with Auburn.
A few Bama fans agree that their fans are worse.
Every Auburn fan agrees that Bama fans are worse.
Some neutral fans agree that Bama and Auburn fans are equal.
Some neutral fans agree that Bama fans are worse.
So the opinion of the board overall is that Bama fans are worse.
