It will all work out and the aggies will take the loss this year.

Perkins was great in 2022, but then teams started to scheme for him. He had 3 sacks against Arkansas and did not have another sack until the bowl game against Purdue.
Perkins is pretty good in coverage and has two interceptions in his career.
As others point out, he does not have the size you would need for a DE. His size is more similar to a safety.
If you don't knoww whwat the STAR role is, it is meant to be a versatile position. Problem most similalr to a safety in the box.
Here is what Blake Baker had to say:
By the way, a player can still blitz from the LB/DB position.

"I just think the STAR is so versatile," Baker said. "And quite frankly, we sat down at the end of the year, and I asked, 'Where are you most comfortable?' And he said the STAR."
"He’s got that capability to still allow us to be flexible from a coverage standpoint, but I do think that he’s a really, really good space player. I think with that position, you’re able to do a lot of different things with him."
"It will also keep offenses not necessarily knowing where he’s going to line up every single snap. Whether it be pressure, coverage, or him being on the line of scrimmage, we're able to do many different things."
"That’s kind of like the little secret sauce in this defense. The more position flexibility that guy gives you, the more versatile we can be on defense."
By the way, a player can still blitz from the LB/DB position.

Thanks, Danny. We can always count on you to be a wealth of knowledge.

If you know me so well... then you should just call.
Then again, if you actually know me... then you would have already called.
But the aggies will take that loss to LSU this year slick.

They want him to be the honey badger and blitz… but opposing teams will just make him cover the slot if possible.
Will be interesting chess match. To be honest I doubt A&M is the team to make him play in coverage. They are going to be a run first team and will just right straight at him to negate his speed.
I’m not trolling, just talking ball. So we’ll see how it shakes out.

quote:Okay? Then LSU can send any number of other talented EDGE players after the quarterback, or any of the three line backers on the roster that have sub 4.5 speed. Meanwhile, Perk will be in space to make a play on a ball carrier.
Okay, you're almost there. Now, just take the next step in the logical chain. If an OC knows Perk is going to cover a TE, then he's going to give him a a TE to cover* and remove him from the pass rush. That's effectively blocking him with a TE.
quote:He was covering slot receivers out of the nickel spot, but good try.
*Btw, for those crowing about his coverage stats, I'm sure it has nothing to do with covering an in-line TE.
quote:If you can find me any player in America (much less a linebacker) who can consistently cover a top 3 tight end in the NFL, I will personally pay their NIL to get them at LSU.
He ain't walking out in the slot covering the Bowers of the world.
There are no "Brock Bowers' of the world" in college football this year.

Still, I am fine with him in coverage. It also allows Baker to draw up disguised "nickel/safety" blitzes, but with Harold Perkins.
quote:Here is where him being more off ball helps. He's coming downhill as a safety type and shooting a gap, instead of read/react pure LB or just getting bulldozed by a tackle.

I know this is hard to believe, but why is LSU overthinking this with Perkins? They guy excels at getting to the QB quickly. Stop trying to make him into a 3 down player if he cant hold up against the run.
He is elite at speed rushing off the edge and stunting up the middle with the right DT help, but he's average to bad against a power running game.
He is a very good player in coverage. Making him STAR primarily allows him to do a little of both. We will certainly put him at EDGE in certain instances, just not every down.
He has the ability to be a 3 own player, just not at EDGE (which isn't really a 3 down position) or as a pure off ball LB. He's basically going to play 3 different positions this year, and it's all up to Baker to figure out when to put him where. I'm confident it will work out, especially with the emergence of Weeks as a superstar and a guy like Keys showing he can play LB well. It's not just Perk and some JAGS.

Pretty much the gameplan for the last decade or so, no?

Harold Perkins shows up in two or three games every season. The rest of the time he is a ghost.
When he was a freshman I thought he was going to terrorize the SEC. Turns out he has only terrorized LSU.

Well no shite if an OC knows what a defender is doing on a play he can scheme/call plays accordingly
The whole point of him moving to the star is the versitility the position allows and making it harder for OCs to do this
Idiot

I think at this point it is obvious that it is not the coaching staff making the decision where Perkins. We all are aware of his strengths. This has to be a decision made by Perkins and his family. Either way he is a great football player. Hoping he contributes a lot this year.

quote:Perkins gives up a good five-six inches to most elite TE's. He also will get pushed on his arse by those guys because he's the size of a DB.
I'll take my chances with Perk on tight ends.

I agree with you. Home team winning has been pretty consistent lately.

He won't have a career in the NFL. The epitome of a tweener.
