This is correct.

Every time there was a BCS controversy (defined as the teams not matching the AP top 2), the computers and other objective data (e.g., the strength of schedule component that got Oklahoma to the 2003 game) became less important in the ranking. But when the AP dropped out, it was replaced by another human poll.

By the time the Okie State/Oklahoma game started, ESPN was rolling a scroll that said it would be Bama/LSU. Okie St could not have scored enough points to change that. They were screwed by missing the fourth quarter field goal in Ames.

It is certainly debatable whether Bama should have been there, but that's no excuse for how poorly LSU played that night.
