I don't know about that, played against him in hs, didn't seem all that soft to me.

Ok
To be fair. Someone had to ride that NCAA probation train for four years to get us back to normal and Mike did a decent job.
He brought in Antoine Caldwell, Javier Arenas, and a lot of the depth that made up the 2008-09 teams
And I'm glad we get to dump on him and not Sylvester Croom who everybody agrees is a solid guy. I do not want to know what some of our yahoos would have had to say about Croom when those teams inevitably failed due to sanctions.

Guy was to soft, terrible OC, lazy, last name got him the job, terrible work out program, terrible organizer, had no leadership skills, blew more 4th quarter game than any coach, no discipline team full of thugs that Saban had to run off.

Well, it's obvious you weren't an Alabama fan during these years.

So ignore all the significant players on the 2009 title team he brought in? Javy, McElroy, Woodall, Marquis Johnson, Upchurch, Mike Johnson, Deadrick, Cory Reamer. Most of the 2007 class committed to Shula's as well. Rolando, Vlachos, Luther Davis. 2009 doesn't happen without those guys.

You can really take it further than that and say without Shula, there is no way in the world we hire Saban.
Shula kept the program relatively clean. Hell, at that point I was just glad to have a coach who didn't embarrass us off the field.
No way in hell I ever hate on Shula.

Not a fan of those fans. Your team should be clearly marked and never in doubt.

Back when Tyrone Protho got hurt in the Florida game, Alabama was trucking most everyone they were playing. They were on a really good trajectory that season before his injury then the air went out of the sails. Shula was not as bad as some try to portray him.

I admire Shula as a clutch QB.
I admire him for coming back, accepting the job in difficult circumstances.
I remember, as far as recruiting goes, high school coaches in the Mobile area saying they never saw Shula.
If he had interest in one of their players, he would make phone calls. Whereas, they said Saban (when at LSU) was constantly flying in, making personal visits to the school, recruiting the player.

Shula didn't have a backbone as a coach. One of the first things Joe Kines did as interim coach was force guys to go to class. The story around town was Shula would make smart arse comments when guys were late to team meetings...unless you were Brodie Croyle. And since Croyle was apparently late regularly the story goes other guys would wait for him to show up and then all walk in together essentially daring Shula to say something to them...which of course he didn't. Yeah sanctions definitely didn't help ...but neither did the lack of discipline .

And yet he was still drafted 6 overall and spent over a decade in the league...
